This holiday marks the year mark of the first lockdown of the pandemic. Most were unable to leave their homes and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day last year while this year, things have slowly opened up in most places making St. Paddy’s Day celebrations a possibility. And as a bonus, here’s a little history lesson about St. Patrick’s Day!
St. Patrick’s Day was originally observed in America by Irish soldiers who longed for home during the Revolutionary War. During the years, the popularity of St. Patrick’s Day grew. While it was considered a minor religious holiday in Ireland, it became more and more commercialized in the states as the years went on.
From dyeing the Chicago River to the parades and Guinness drinking debauchery, it really has become an excuse to drink green food and beer. And oddly enough, many of the traditions such as the shamrock and wearing green as well as the myths about St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland and even being Irish, are actually all fabricated!
While there was a Patrick who ultimately became quite pious and followed the path to become a bishop, much of what we have now come to base this fun, clover colored holiday on is all a bit of a composite passed down and added too as generations grow older.
