For many people, the last few years have been quite a struggle. After experiencing the first truly global pandemic since the Spanish flu of 1918, millions of citizens were forced to stay indoors and limit all non-essential journeys to slow the spread of the virus and protect key healthcare systems. While this was based on scientific logic and reasoning, a negative outcome was that the isolated and lonely in society became more so, and physical contact was lost between millions of family members and loved ones. In some ways, the covid-19 pandemic reminded people of the importance of maintaining good mental health. As the worse effects of the pandemic have subsided in many countries, there is still a definite need to look for intelligent ways to improve every person’s mental wellbeing. Put simply, working routines and busy personal lives can make it hard to fully relax and “switch off” from the fast pace of modern life. In this article, some essential top tips that everyone can adopt to improve their mental health will be described in detail.

Choose freelance work over an office regime

As a first top tip, it can be exceptionally beneficial to break free of a traditional 9-5 office-based working regime and instead seek out freelance-based work. For many people, the constant routine of office work can become tedious quite quickly, and issues such as micromanagement and ever-increasing workloads can cause workers to suffer from stress or even burnout. In the US, workplace stress costs over $300 billion a year in terms of working days lost and the cost of receiving help to deal with the symptoms of stress. It can be far more beneficial for your mental health to choose freelance work that allows you to manage your own work schedules and pick when you will have free time. For example, if you enjoy driving and would like to make this your source of income, you could consider becoming a freelance shipping driver. In this type of freelance occupation, shipping work is posted on job boards, and the driver is then free to bid on jobs that are suitable for their vehicle and their location. Generally, the lowest bid will secure the job, and then the driver will be tasked with fulfilling the shipment. Many people find that this type of work gives them far greater control over their work-life balance and allows them time to enjoy free time and a bespoke working week.

Get better quality sleep

Most people understand that getting regular good quality sleep at night can play a key role in staying mentally well. Anyone who has experienced a terrible night’s sleep will understand it can affect your mood, make you feel fatigued and irritable, and can lead to lower levels of concentration at work. Experts recommend that the average healthy adult should aim to have between seven to eight and a half hours of good quality, unbroken sleep per night. This allows the body and mind to fully recover from the stresses and strains of the day and is a vital way in supporting a healthy immune system. To improve your sleep patterns, ensure that you do not use smartphones or other tech devices in the few hours that lead up to bedtime. If you are struggling to sleep, take a hot bath or enjoy a milky hot drink. 

Exercise regularly

Health professionals have known about the benefits of regular exercise for hundreds of years. It can help to lower your blood pressure, promote better quality sleep, and is a key way of staying in good physical health while helping to reduce stress levels. Regular exercise produces a range of hormones in the body, including dopamine which helps people to enjoy a positive mood and cultivate feelings of mental wellbeing. Taking exercise three or more times a week that allows you to get slightly out of breath (but not severely breathless) will ensure that you are getting sufficient levels of physical activity. 

Cook from fresh

As a final top tip, cooking from fresh can be a perfect way to enjoy both a healthy body and good mental health. Many processed foods and ready meals contain high levels of salt and artificial preservatives, which can be harmful to the body over time. Conversely, cooking from fresh with high-quality ingredients will give your body and mind the nutrition it needs to function at its best. Cooking can also be a pleasurable activity. There is a certain satisfaction that can be gained from producing a home-cooked meal that is a delight for the tastebuds, and it is also a great life skill to teach younger family members.
