Needless to say, receiving a diagnosis can feel like stepping into a storm of uncertainty. It doesn’t really matter what illness it is, whether it’s cancer, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, the list could go on and on, really. It’s scary because now, you’re stepping into totally new territory. Suddenly, there’s a flurry of medical appointments, treatments to consider, and a multitude of new responsibilities.

Now, your mental health will most likely take a nose dive because what do you do? How do you handle this news? How will others handle this news? What’s your future going to look like? it might not sound easy, but during these times, you’ll have to keep up a routine. Actually, maintaining a routine can offer a lifeline of stability and control. But how can you cultivate a sense of consistency, even in the face of illness? Well, here’s what you need to know.

Your Treatment is Your Priority

When you’re confronted with this health challenge, you have to keep in mind that one of the most crucial components of your routine is prioritizing treatment. There’s just no other way around this, really. Whether it involves regular check-ups, medication management, physical therapy, or infusion services such as chemotherapy (or non-chemo), these treatments can’t be skipped.

Yes, by all means, this might drastically change your lifestyle, but it’s worth it. Sometimes, it might seem inconvenient, but again, it’s completely worth it. This needs to be number one; this needs to be greatly considered!

Understand This is the New Normal

It’s vital to treat these appointments with the same level of importance as other commitments- if not, probably more important. Usually, your doctor or the special clinic you’re getting treatment at will help you with scheduling, and they usually tend to be fairly flexible too. So, you might want to just go ahead and set reminders and carve out dedicated time in your daily or weekly schedule specifically for treatment sessions. This is the new normal for your life after all. Is there anyone who can help you? Sometimes, clinics can pick you up, or they have a service that can do that.

Now, this can’t be non-negotiable in the slightest, this needs to be number one, and this needs to be a massive part of your health. Again, yes, it might feel like it’s getting in the way, but your illness and your treatment are the new normal, and you have to live with that.

There Has to be a Balance

While focusing on treatment should be the number one thing in your life right now, the whole point is to try your best to go about life- again, the new normal. So, that’s why it’s essential to remember the importance of balance. Your routine should encompass not only medical appointments and treatments but also activities that bring you joy, relaxation, and connection with loved ones.

It’s going to be a really good idea to just allocate time for self-care activities that nourish your body, mind, and spirit. It really varies from person to person and how you’re doing physically speaking, but try and do things that make your soul happy, like meditation, being out in nature, or even doing a hobby that you love. But overall, just try to stay connected with friends and family members who provide support and encouragement along your journey.
