Four Ways To Take Your Mental Health Into Your Own Hands

fear anxietyAccording to a recent report from PEW, “90% of Americans feel we are in a mental health crisis,” with the number of people reporting dealing with mental health struggles increasing year on year. Furthermore, as many people choose to “suffer in silence,” it is important to note that the number of people who are dealing with these issues is much higher than we may think.

If this is something that you are struggling with, know that you are not alone. In fact, 1 in 4 adults will experience issues with their mental health in a given year. Furthermore, there are many steps you can take to take your mental health into your own hands.

Be willing to admit you have a problem.

The first step to recovery, whether you are dealing with depression or anxiety and panic attacks, is being able to admit that you have a problem. Dismissing your feelings will not make them go away, no matter how hard you try. To get better, you need to find effective ways to deal with what is bothering you.

Think of your mental health in the same way you would any other health condition. In the same way in which you would not try to walk around with a broken leg, you should not let your feelings go unaddressed, either.

Look into treatment options.

Once you have decided that it is time to take action and work on bettering your mental health, you should look into the different treatment and support systems that are available to you. After all, this is not a journey that you have to complete alone!

For example, if you are dealing with substance abuse issues, then the support offered at a local detox center or rehab will play a crucial role in your recovery. They will help you to develop healthy coping mechanisms and work to live a life free from addiction. To get started, simply search the phrase “detox center near me.”

Alternatively, you may benefit from therapy and counselling sessions such as virtual IOP, whether they take place in-person or over the phone, in solo or group settings.

Talk about how you are feeling to others.

Opening up about how you are feeling can be tough – but it’s often the first step towards feeling better. This is because in opening up, you will feel as though a huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders. You’ll realize that you arne’t alone and that there is always somebody that you can turn to in your time of need.

Build a self-care routine.

Developing a self-care routine is also crucial during your recovery. This is because your self-care routine teaches you the importance of actively taking steps to care for yourself, which means your needs are more likely to be addressed moving forward. Remember, you don’t need to necessarily follow all of the current self-care trends and routines, you simply need to find acts of self-care that you enjoy. This could include everything from daily meditation to taking care of your skin!
