Fitness and Freedom: Using Exercise To Reconnect With Nature

winter health fitnessWhile all forms of exercise are generally beneficial for your health, taking your favourite activities outside is a great way to mix things up a bit. With so many people packed into indoor gyms after working inside all day, many lack a connection to nature. To see the forest for the trees, it is important to get outside and unplug once in a while through exercise.

For all of the health benefits that come along with being in nature, it is important that you make it out a few times per week at least. The vitamin D that you can gain from the sun, in addition to the mental benefits that come with being around a natural environment, are just some of the things that you can expect from spending more time exercising outside.

Lace up your hiking shoes and let’s look at some of the ways that exercise can help you reconnect with nature.

Try Out Trail Running

Nothing is more exhilarating than galloping through wooded and mountainous trails on your own two feet. Whether you are an eager amateur or a seasoned veteran of running, taking your strides to the trails is a good way to mix things up. Surrounded by the uncertainty and the magnificence of the forest, you will be swept up in the beauty of it all.

Head Out For Hiking

If moving fast in the forest is not your thing, then you can still make it outside and reconnect with nature through hiking. Moving at a slower but consistent pace will allow you to get a better look at the incredible intricacies of the natural environment. Depending on where you live, you might even be able to witness some wildlife. Make sure to be safe and bring along proper protective equipment and suitable clothing for the weather conditions.

Carry On With Cycling

Even cycling can be a great way to reconnect with nature if you plan your route right. If there are local trails in your area that pass through forests or ascend up mountain slopes, then make sure to make these your first destination.

Be Safe And Use Common Sense

While exercising outside comes with many benefits, it is important to use your common sense when taking your favourite activities outdoors. Do not try to exercise when it is extremely hot or extremely cold outside. Working out in extreme conditions is extremely taxing for your body and may leave your health in worse shape than if you had simply stayed at home.

Always make sure to bring along some water for any extended exercise outdoors. Dehydration, when you are deep in nature, is an unpleasant experience and can easily be avoided with a little preparation.

Ensure that you have the proper equipment for outdoor exercise as well. While activities such as hiking and running usually require very little gear when you are just getting started, it is important to carry the safety equipment that you might need in case your exercise does not go as planned. While unplugging from your cell phone is highly beneficial, you might also consider bringing it along as a means of contacting someone in case there is an outdoor emergency.

Stay Healthy And Happy

Being outside amid natural surroundings and getting exercise are two of the best things that everyone can do to improve their mental and physical well-being. While you might have a busy schedule as everyone does, it is critical that you take the time to reconnect with nature and explore it through exercise from time to time.
