Are you an oily skinned beauty? If you’ve ever been tempted to ditch the SPF for fear of breaking out, white cast, or looking even oilier come 3pm, stop right there. This is for you! Discover just why a mineral sunscreen is going to be your best friend in 2023.
What is mineral sunscreen?
Let’s start from the beginning. There are two types of sunscreen formulations – mineral and chemical. When it comes to mineral sunscreen, these formulas are made using a mineral filter like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Their function is very similar to chemical sunscreens, in that they also work by absorbing UV rays and releasing as heat into the air. The difference is that roughly 5% of UV rays are reflected away from the skin (whilst 95% are absorbed and transformed into heat). It’s a little complicated, but that’s the science in layman’s terms.
Why is mineral sunscreen great for oily skin types?
If you’ve ever shied away from sunscreen for fear of thick, slodgy zinc-like stripes on your face, chances are you were thinking of old school mineral sunscreen formulas. So why are we suggesting this is great again? Because mineral sunscreen in Australia has come a very long way! In fact, you can now find brands creating dream-like versions that are super lightweight. Those prone to redness, sensitivity, and an oily skin type will enjoy wearing these formulas as they have a matte finish and the lightweight texture won’t feel like its clogging your pores either.
What to look for in your sunscreen?
When it comes to choosing your sunscreen for oily skin, consider the following factors:
Finish
It’s important to select a facial sunscreen that has a matte finish if you are prone to oiliness. Avoid glowy formulas which will end up leaving you looking a little too slick.
Texture
Opt for lightweight formulas here. Patch test on your hand to get a gauge on how the formula feels before applying to your face.
Tint
Consider opting for a tinted sunscreen if you’re looking for a little coverage as well.
SPF
Avoid SPF15 sunscreens and always choose a broad spectrum sunscreen and a minimum SPF30 or ideally SPF50+.
The Best Mineral Sunscreens in 2023
When it comes to finding the best mineral sunscreens (also known by some as physical sunscreens), we’ve done the hard work and trialling and testing for you. Here’s two to watch out for in 2023.
Lean Screen SPF50+
For the ultimate matte finish and the highest level of UV protection, we pick Lean Screen from Australian makers, Ultra Violette. It’s a zinc based sunscreen with a matte finish and lightweight feel. Offering SPF 50+ protection, it glides onto skin and won’t make you break out. Bonus points for being fragrance-free!
Clean Screen SPF30
If you prefer a lightweight gel feel on your skin, consider Clean Screen also from Ultra Violette. Instead, it uses a titanium dioxide filter to block out UV rays and offers protection SPF30. It’s not matte but it’s not a glowy finish either – think of it as a barely there, natural look.
Inspired to try a mineral sunscreen? Just remember, wearing an SPF is only one part of your overall skin protection. Consider wearing a broad brimmed hat, protective clothing and sticking to the shade.
