Cruises are a wonderful thing. I’ve been lucky enough to go on a few cruises in my time, and I’ve always appreciated and enjoyed the experience, especially if I was travelling with someone that was very dear to me. However, cruises can have a reputation for being unhealthy, mostly due to the idea that cruises are opulent, decadent and luxurious.
Of course, cruises are all these things and so much more, but staying healthy whilst sailing the seven seas needs to be a priority, as you don’t want to make yourself ill on your dream holiday. So, how do you stay healthy on a cruise? Here are my top tips.
Drink bottled water
One piece of advice that we all get when we travel is to drink bottled water, and on a cruise ship this is no different. You will be served bottled water throughout your trip, but it can also be very useful for once you arrive at the various destinations on your journey.
Take a few bottles of water with you when you disembark and buy some bottled water when you’re on land. This will help protect you from any bugs or other hidden nasties in the local water that your body might not be used to.
Go easy on the buffet
If a cruise means one thing to many people, it’s that magical word: buffet. Don’t get me wrong, everyone loves all you can eat dining, but eating too much and too quickly will lead to problems, including heartburn, indigestion and sore stomachs.
Remember to pace yourself in the dining room; eat slower and don’t overfill your plate; it’s ok to leave some food left over, so don’t feel the need to indulge in a bit of competitive eating on your vacation.
Wash your hands
We often take our hands for granted; and because of this, we don’t often realise just how much bacteria they come into contact with on a daily basis.
Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before eating to ensure that you don’t get a stomach bug.
Keep active
While cruises can be an excuse to sit back, relax and unwind, many cruise companies offer their customers the use of gym facilities, as well as organising fitness classes and other activities during the cruise.
If this doesn’t sound like something you’d like to do, remember that walking around the ship is also a great way to stay active and also meet new people, so don’t sit in your cabin, get out and walk!
Cruises are a great holiday choice, but remember to pace yourself, drink bottled water and also stay active during your time on the high seas for a great trip and beautiful memories.
