breast cancer screeningCancer is a disease that affects the lives of millions of people each year. Breast cancer is an aggressive form of cancer, that contrary to common belief, does not just affect women. Men can also develop breast cancer, although it is somewhat rare. With that said, if caught early, treatment for breast cancer is usually successful.

If you are having a breast cancer scare and need to go into a clinic for further tests and screening, then this is the article for you. Here you will find everything that you need to know about breast cancer screening and diagnostics:

What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a common disease, responsible for killing around 43,600 women each year. The disease is characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If breast cancer is allowed to spread to other organs and parts of the body, it can quickly turn fatal. There are different types of breast cancer; the type depends on which cells in the breast turn into cancer. Because of this, the early identification of breast cancer is very important. Some symptoms to watch out for are:

  • Warmth in the breast.
  • Itchy breast.
  • Skin turning a shade of orange.
  • Increase in the size of the breast.
  • Redness or rash forming on the breast.
  • Nipple retraction.

These symptoms are not unique to breast cancer, however, and can be caused by multiple other diseases and conditions.

Breast Exams

If you are concerned about your breasts, then it’s important that you visit your physician. If your doctor is also concerned, they can refer you for further screening tests for breast cancer, after their initial assessment. This initial assessment will consist of your doctor checking both of your breasts and lymph nodes, feeling for lumps or other abnormalities. If indeed they do find any abnormalities, you will be referred to a screening service usually within two weeks. Some people prefer to forego their doctor and visit private screening services immediately. It is also recommended to tcheck out https://craftbodyscan.com/

Mammograms

One of the first tests performed by breast cancer screening services are mammograms, which are X-rays of the breast. Mammograms are the most common type of test used in the identification and detection of breast cancer. Mammograms are an extremely effective method of detection and have a high efficacy rate. If an abnormality is found during your mammogram, your doctor will recommend a diagnostic mammogram, which can further evaluate the abnormality. There are also other tests the doctor will recommend if abnormalities are detected. If no abnormalities are detected you will be sent home with a discharge letter; there are myriad causes for lumps in the breast that aren’t cancer, including cysts and non-cancerous tumors.

Breast Ultrasound

Breast ultrasounds are another very common type of test performed on people who are suspected to have breast cancer. Ultrasounds use sound waves to produce images of parts of the body. Ultrasounds can be used to determine whether a lump in the breast is solid or filled with fluid. If it is the latter, then the cause will be a cyst, instead of a cancerous lump.

Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used when cancer is highly suspected or confirmed. MRI machines utilize radio and magnet waves to create pictures of the interior of one’s breast. Prior to an MRI, you will receive an injection of dye, which will help the doctors reading the MRI to see the interior of your breast more clearly. MRIs do not use radiation to create images, however, many people find them incredibly uncomfortable because they can take quite a while and you will have to sit inside a dome-shaped machine. You can listen to music or podcasts to take your mind off of the test, however.

Biopsy

If cancer is suspected, a biopsy will be requested. A biopsy is the only way a doctor can definitively diagnose cancer. During a biopsy, doctors use a needle guided by imaging tests to extract tissue from a suspicious area. Usually, a metal marker is left at the site of the biopsy so that it can be identified and tracked in future imaging tests. When your biopsy is taken, it will be sent to a laboratory where it will be analyzed by experts, who will determine whether or not the cells are cancerous. In more severe cases, be sure to contact a breast reconstruction surgeon.

Biopsy samples are analyzed to determine the type of breast cancer as well, and how aggressive it is. In addition, the biopsy will identify whether the cancer cells have hormone receptors or anything that could impact your treatment and recovery.
