5 Ways to Stay in Shape This Winter

keeping warm when exercising outsideStaying motivated to keep fit in winter can be a challenge. It’s hard enough to leave the cozy cocoon of bed (and the never-ending alarm clock snooze) to do the things we have to do, let alone get up early to exercise. Nevertheless, regular movement is vital for all areas of our mental and physical health, so our fitness is not something we can afford to neglect.

Whether you want to lose weight, beat your personal jogging best or simply find new ways to move your body, here are five ways to stay motivated and stay in shape during the colder months.

Sleep in Your Workout Gear

Workout gear is usually super cozy, so why not sleep in a tank top and yoga pants and save yourself the job of getting dressed in the mornings? None of us feels particularly motivated when our alarm first goes off, but if you’re already dressed to exercise, you’ll have to make a conscious decision to take off your workout clothes and give your fitness regime a miss. It’s all about setting healthy habits; after a few weeks, it will become second nature to roll out of bed in the mornings and start moving.

Wrap Up Warm

It may feel impossible to go running when the weather is frosty, but as long as you’ve got a good pair of running shoes and the pavements aren’t icy, it’s perfectly safe to get out there and burn some calories. Don’t worry about the cold: wrap up in some warm clothes and get moving. Once you’ve been jogging for a few minutes, you will soon warm up, and after a hot bath or shower when you get home, you’ll feel amazing. If temperatures are freezing, wear thermals under your running gear and keep it brief (HIIT workouts are great for colder weather).

Exercise at Home

On particularly dark, cold mornings, it can feel impossible to leave your warm and cozy home – so don’t. Take up yoga or simply do some push-ups and squats in your living room: around 30 minutes of exercise per day is more than enough. There are plenty of online fitness tutorials you can follow, so make it easy on yourself and don’t brave the outside elements if you don’t want to.

Get a Dog

Getting a dog has many proven health benefits, not least that it forces you to get out for a walk at least once or twice a day. Look up some scenic walks around your area and plan your route; just make sure to walk during the daytime or wear reflective clothing when the weather gets dark. Keeping fit may be your primary motivation for getting a dog, but your pet’s health is also important. Therefore, to make sure your canine companion is in fighting fit condition and ready to keep you company on your walks and hikes, look for a vets with a walk in vet clinic. By doing so, you’re prepared to take care of your dog’s needs, and if anything were to happen, you can have them checked out without further delay.

Go Ice Skating

Ice-skating is so much fun that most people don’t even think about how many calories they’re burning. In terms of fitness, ice-skating is one of the most exciting exercises you can do, plus it’s not particularly demanding. However, before you hit the rink you will want to learn about proper figure or hockey skate sizing so that you make sure your feet are comfortable.

Go with friends or your significant other to make it a social event, and you’ll soon be wishing it was winter all year round!
