healthy skinThink that getting soft and youthful looking skin is impossible? While your pursuit of perfect skin has likely resulted in the purchase of all sorts of products, there are simple lifestyle changes you can make to improve the health of your skin. The simple fact is that most people are skipping the most obvious steps in keeping their skin happy and healthy.

Tired of dealing with dry flaky skin? Want to banish acne for good? Keep reading for 5 simple life changes that you can make to dramatically improve your skin’s health.

1. Drink Plenty of Water

Not only does staying well hydrated improve your health, it’s also quite healthy for your skin. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin will look radiant, moisturized, and youthful.

Drinking water is beneficial in that it flushes out any toxins in your body. Toxins and chemicals from cosmetics and skincare products can be quite damaging. Staying hydrated helps to mitigate the effects of these harmful chemicals.

Staying hydrated also improves your skin’s color and elasticity. Hydrated skin is supple and glowing.

Since we all know that water can get boring after awhile, spice things up by adding fruit or herbs to your water. Drinking healthy teas like green tea also count towards your water intake. Be sure to avoid caffeine, sugary drinks, and alcohol as these can cause dehydration.

2. Get Lots of Good Sleep

Sleep offers all sorts of benefits when it comes to healthy skin. On those days when you wake up and are short of sleep, you not only physically feel it, but your skin also shows it. A lack of sleep can lead to dullness and a lack of color.

Getting enough sleep also helps to minimize stress hormones in the body. High levels of stress hormones often cause higher levels of inflammation which increase your risk of breakouts.

As an added bonus, by getting plenty of restful sleep each night, you give your body the time it needs to heal and repair. Each day your skin is exposed to all sorts of dangerous things like free radicals. When you sleep, your body is able to repair itself to battle against daily damage.

3. Know Your Products

If you’re like many people, you buy the least expensive product on the shelf or you choose a product that you’ve heard good things about. While all natural products have grown in availability and popularity, not everyone understands the importance of natural products.

Many store bought skincare products like moisturizers, lotions, cleansers, and cosmetics have all sorts of harmful chemicals. Common chemicals include:

  • Parabens
  • Dioxins
  • Fragrance
  • Formaldehyde
  • Aluminum
  • Triethanolamine
  • Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)

Not only can these ingredients impact your skin’s health, they can cause internal issues as well. Some of these chemicals have been linked to endocrine disruption, respiratory issues, and the increased risk of cancer.

To avoid these chemicals altogether, use all-natural products. These brands tend to use safe and effective ingredients like Shea butter, natural and essential oils, rose water, and more.

4. Minimize Stress

When you’re stressed, you feel it. You’re more likely to suffer from headaches, digestive problems, and even issues sleeping. Stress also has a bad way of rearing its ugly head on your skin. High levels of stress increase your risk of suffering from visible frown lines, wrinkles, and breakouts.

Of course, living a stress-free life is all but impossible. Working, raising a family, or getting a college education all come with some level of stress. However, you minimize your daily stressors by doing things like yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises.

By minimizing and better dealing with stress in your life, you can stop breakouts and wrinkles before they happen.

5. Know Your Environment

Knowing your environment and properly preparing for any elements you may face is a crucial step in proper skin care. For example, constant exposure to poor air quality can have a drastic impact on the quality and appearance  of your skin.

By staying away from polluted environments like a smoky bar, you can better protect your skin. Polluted air tends to be full of free radicals which cause all sorts of skin damage.

It’s also important to consider your surroundings. Planning on spending a lot of time outside? Ensure you’re wearing a natural sunscreen product to block out the sun’s harmful UV rays. Dealing with cold temperatures or wind? Moisturize to prevent dry and cracked skin.

Conclusion

While there are all sorts of products that are designed to improve the look and feel of your skin, there are things you can do at home to take care of your skin both inside and out. With these 5 simple life changes, you can reduce inflammation, breakouts, and other common skin problems.
