5 Signs You Need To Consult A Dentist

choosing dentist

Unfortunately, oral hygiene has been limited to regular brushing and flossing for a long time. Although this is an excellent way to prevent acid and plaque buildup, this process largely ignores the rest of your oral cavity.

Oral hygiene is not just limited to your teeth. Taking care of the gums, tooth enamel, and tongue is critical to keeping an effective oral routine. This is because the degradation of these membranes usually helps us spot the early signs of dental diseases.

Here are a few definite signs that you need to consult a dentist.

Bleeding Gums

The leading cause of bleeding gums is a condition called gingivitis, or inflamed gums. This condition is caused by plaque buildup in the gum lining.

When plaque is not removed, it hardens and becomes tartar or calculus. If it is not removed, the tartar becomes permanent and stores millions of bacteria that will lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and further bleeding of the gums.

If you have some plaque in your teeth, that does not seem to be removed by brushing, flossing or mouthwash, contact a dental expert from Elite Dental Care, for comprehensive dental treatment.

Teeth Sensitivity

Teeth sensitivity is typically felt when consuming hot or cold food and drinks. The most widespread cause of tooth sensitivity is enamel erosion or plaque buildup.

Enamel erosion results from heavy acidic food and drink consumption, abrasive brushing, and teeth whitening solutions like hydrogen peroxide. In comparison, plaque buildup results from inadequate brushing or flossing and exercising bad oral habits like chewing tobacco.

You can reduce teeth sensitivity by changing to a soft-bristled toothbrush or using toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth. Another method to try is using a straw for drinking liquids; this will assist in avoiding direct acid contact with your teeth.

Bad Breath

Bad breath, or halitosis, is typically a symptom of other dental diseases. Halitosis often results from tooth decay, gum disease, and gum cancer.

Although many DIY techniques for reducing bad breath exist, you can only treat persistent halitosis by seeking dental treatment.

Red Or Swollen Gums

Swollen gums are the first sign of underlying gum disease.

Healthy gums are firm, resilient, and pink in color, not red. In contrast, red gums indicate nerve damage between the teeth and gum lining. This may be caused by plaque and bacteria buildup.

If left untreated swollen gums can become inflamed and cause massive discomfort when eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth.

It would be strongly advised to seek an expert dental opinion to prevent this condition from worsening or causing other issues like acute gum pain or nerve damage.

Toothache

Toothaches are the most common dental compilation that many adult humans face. The cause may be from something as small as food residue stuck in your teeth or a symptom ensuing from dental disease.

You can treat minor toothaches at home. An adequate brushing or flossing session can easily remove the plaque that is causing you discomfort.

However, more considerable and persistent toothaches must be taken to a dentist to seek further dental treatment.

Indeed, you may not need dental treatment for common ailments like minor toothache or halitosis. However, these signs may also be the symptoms of more serious dental complications such as tooth decay, gum disease, or nerve damage.
