2010, the new decade, the decade of many achievements for the green as well as vegan movements. Now officially into the double digit teen years, we have quite a bit to reflect on from the past 365 days. Before I write up my “Best of 2010” in the coming weeks, I thought I’d share some of the highlights that may inspire even more greatness in 2011!!

  • Bill Clinton adopts a plant based diet & announces it on Wolf Blitzer
  • “The Cove” wins the academy award for best documentary
  • Ellen brings more and more plant based cooking segments in her shows
  • Steve Wynn goes vegan and adds vegan options to his gourmet restaurants in Las Vegas
  • The UN announces that a plant based diet is the best way to fight disease and end world hunger
  • 7-11 launches vegan options
  • Food Revolution hits network TV, doing its part to change the way our school children eat and view food
  • Forks Over Knives builds up big hype before it is even released! (This will definitely be a 201 highlight)
  • Vegan and gluten free products explode onto the retail/consumer scene (i.e. Daiya Cheese & Gardein)
  • Vegan cookbooks hit an all time high in sales (i.e. The Conscious Cook) Even Good Housekeeping Magazine is putting out a vegan cookbook next year.
  • More vegan and vegetarian restaurants pop up while national restaurant chains incorporate more special diet friendly meals and alternatives (i.e. The Yard House)
  • Vegan fashion is hippie dippy no more! (i.e. Cri De Coeur & Neuara shoes)
  • The Gulf oil spill causes folks to really take a look at alternative fuel choices and the health of our planet
  • Sun Chips unveils their biodegradable bags and Coca-Cola launches their partly plant based bottles
  • Many unlikely celebs announce their switch to veggies (i.e. Mike Tyson & Ozzie Osbourne)
  • Both Biggest Loser trainers go Veg
  • And The Healthy Voyager secures a book (and possible TV shows) for 2011!

2010 was a great year for the green as well as the plant based and special diet groups. We can only go up from here! 3 cheers for the new year, 2011!!
