When Body Weight Affects Your Self Esteem

weight maitainanceGaining weight and being obese can cause many issues, including lifestyle diseases, low self-esteem, and anxiety. To take control of your body weight, first, understand the cause. The main factors that determine your weight include

  • Genetic predispositions
  • Eating habits
  • Level of physical activity
  • Metabolic rate

Some people, when stressed out, eat a lot and limit physical activity. They console themselves with food, and when the habit goes on for a long time, it can lead to obesity. Sometimes it’s not easy to take control of your bodyweight unless with a bariatrician or a weight specialist’s intervention. Procedures such as gastric sleeve surgery may be recommended but understand whether you have an eating disorder or you need to make lifestyle changes to become healthier as you lose the excess weight. When body weight affects your self-esteem, what should you do?

Seek Help

Low self-esteem resulting from a negative body image can lead to anxiety and depression, which makes it harder to deal with the primary problem, obesity. Talk to a therapist, a confidant, or loved ones about the issue. You probably feel bad after eating more than you need or eating junk food, but you can’t help it because the cravings are more powerful than your willpower. A therapist may help you understand why you eat more or have uncontrolled food cravings.

The cravings can result from stress, low physical activity, hormonal imbalance, or lack of sleep. A low-quality diet, where there is an increased consumption of sugars, processed foods, and starch, can significantly lead to fast weight gain.

Take Action

The more you sit down and feel sorry for yourself, the harder it gets to break the unhealthy habit. Follow the advice of the therapist together with other specialists to achieve healthy body weight. It will not be comfortable building a new lifestyle, but it’s worthwhile. To get the intended results faster, get an accountability partner or let the therapist check your progress. You can choose to have a tummy tuck, a whole-body makeover, or a gastric sleeve surgery but for the results to be permanent, make healthy lifestyle choices.

Change Your Eating Habits

Be more conscious of what and when you eat.  You may want to lower the food portions and eat more vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and proteins and minimize processed foods. Do not starve yourself but fill your stomach with healthy foods. To make the process easier, get rid of all junk foods and replace them with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Also, when you go to work, carry healthy snacks and packed lunch. Minimize takeaways and cook your food more often.

Be More Active

Although changing your diet is the most critical decision, physical activity will help you achieve the desired results faster, boost your energy levels and make you feel better. Start small, then build the intensity gradually. Even 10 to 15 minutes of simple physical activity every day can help keep you fit. Exercises to start with include walking, jogging, swimming, and when you are ready, enroll in a local gym. When possible, instead of driving to work, walk or cycle. Opt for the stairs more often than the lift and embrace every opportunity to engage in physical activity. Have a mentor who checks your progress, guides you on the best workout routines, and encourages you to persist even when your body aches or doesn’t feel like working out.

Take Better Care of Yourself

Apart from eating healthy foods and exercising, engage in healthy activities that make you happy. Invest more in yourself and don’t depend so much on others. Be your number one cheerleader. If a new class, buying yourself a new outfit, or going for a new hairstyle boosts your confidence, go for it. The more you take better care of yourself, build more meaningful relationships and improve your life, the more your self-esteem develops.

The primary cause of low self-esteem is the inability to make the necessary changes even when you know the health risks involved. You may hate your current body and think that everyone else hates you. Soon after making a wrong decision, such as eating something you are not supposed to or postponing a workout for the 100th time, you may regret and feel bad about it. It would help if you cultivated the willpower to make better decisions and focus on your goal.

Every day you make a favorable decision, no matter how small, it boosts your self-esteem and encourages you to stay on track. Soon, you start noticing real body changes, which improves your self-esteem even more.

You need to sort out your eating habits and change your lifestyle so that the process of losing weight accelerates. However, you can add additional tools to your workouts, like a tummy tuck belt. Just contact tummy tuck customer service if you have any problem
