What to Look For in a Physiotherapist

physical therapistWhen your body isn’t feeling its best it can take a toll on your daily life, and you may need to find a physiotherapist to get you feeling like your old self again. While there should be plenty of potential physio options in your local area, there’s often a big difference between a good one and a great one. Getting you back into full physical order is important, but it’s one where a great physio can really help. So let’s look at a number of different factors that could help you find the right physiotherapist for you.

1. Check online reviews

While you shouldn’t only rely on online reviews for finding a physio, they’re a great place to start. Thankfully, the Internet has helped people find what they want for all different services, and physio is no different. Just make sure you check the right review sites and analyse the results carefully.

2. Ask friends and family

While online reviews are a great place to start, nothing beats a personal recommendation from someone you know. Thankfully, if someone’s been through similar problems, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Your friends and family can tell you if they know someone great, or someone to avoid — just ask!

3. Check where they’re located

While you’ll want to make sure your physio is close enough to you to be convenient, you’ll also want to make sure access is easy and safe. This is especially important for people with specific movement problems. Also, you might want to check public transport options if they’re relevant to you, as you don’t want to spend too long on a bus if it makes your condition worse.

4. Check their qualifications

A good physio should display their qualifications and education background clearly in their premises. If not, you might want to ask why.

5. Check that you get along well

If you’re going to be spending a lot of time doing physio, you’ll need to make sure you get along well enough with your physiotherapist. if you specifically require a male or female physio, then this might be something you want to consider when searching in your area.

6. Ask what sort of treatment they’d recommend

Do they only recommend one or two visits, or a longer plan of care? Can they be visited as and when required, or do you need to book regular appointments in advance? Consider these factors and how they fit in with your daily activities.

7. Make sure you can afford them

While you’ll want to try and find the best physio options possible, cost is also a factor. The price of your care can vary a lot depending on how long each session is, as well as how often you’re visiting. Different therapists can also vary quite a lot in price. If you can’t afford it all up front, check to see if there are financing options available.

8. Check what other services are on offer

Some physiotherapists will also offer additional treatments like massages and acupuncture. Check which of these might be of interest to you, and also if there are any additional charges for them or if they’re included already.
