I had the fun opportunity to visit a Wendy’s location before they opened to see how they prep their famous fresh salads. And I was super impressed! Being a plant based eater for 16 years, my only experiences with fast food restaurants have been with french fries on a road trip or at an airport. However, now that I know that Wendy’s make their salads fresh every single day, I now have a much healthier fast food option!
I saw that they get fresh produce delivered 3 times a week and that every vegetable is hand washed and cut every day. In fact, they prep salads twice a day as well as if they have a rush on greens! Just the way you would make a salad at home, they do it in house, in every location, every single day. The cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes are cut by hand, no bagged or pre-packed stuff. In fact, you can watch this fun video “Wendy’s Romaine Lettuce Journey” from the point of view of a head of lettuce on it’s way to Wendy’s here: http://clvr.li/1O72shi
Then they are hand built and await to be devoured! I also was delighted to see that 3 of their 5 signature salads are made without cheese or chicken, as they top the salads at the time of order, so for vegetarians and vegans, ordering the salad sans chicken or cheese is easy as they are already ready to go! I LOVED the Apple Pecan salad as well as the Asian Cashew Salad, which is the one I got to hand build myself during my visit ; )
I’ve now learned that there is a big difference between “fresh” and “freshly assembled.” Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s restaurant in 1969 grounded on the premise that “Quality is our Recipe®.” For more than 45 years, Wendy’s has been invested in bringing customers the quality ingredients that differentiate us from others in the industry.
It really is incredible refreshing to see that a fast food chain takes such pride in the quality of what they are serving and are cognizant of having options for special diet diners. And they aim to please so if for any reason, you would like a salad customized to your dietary needs, a team member will fresh make one to order. Pretty awesome, right?
I really was impressed as well as happy to know that I have a healthy and fresh option at Wendy’s!
