I spent many years wondering when I would get to visit Russia. I always looked at the photos of St. Basil’s Cathedral in wonder of it’s beautiful colors as well as shots of Red Square in all it’s imposing majesty. And when I finally got my chance, it was all I dreamed of and more!
Russia is incredible, beautiful, fun, forward thinking and friendly! I made so many wonderful friends and memories in this country with a checkered past and I was so glad I made the effort to get there and experience it for myself.
The visa process for an American is no joke but as mentioned, well worth it. There is a very lengthy application that needs to be submitted along with certified letters from your accommodations, passport, id photo for visa and a few other forms that need to be filled out properly, along with the right fee, to the closest Russian embassy (no walk ins allowed, your packet must be mailed in). Once you make the cut, your adventure can begin!
Just walking around Moscow, I was in awe of its architecture and history mixed in with the chicness of modern day gastronomy and fashion. Everyone is dressed to the nines and look like they walked out of a magazine or off a runway, every eatery and bar was inviting.
But walking through Red Square, the Kremlin, Gorky Park and standing in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral in person is just breathtaking. So much rich history and culture in a famed city and you know, the vegan food scene is pretty damn good too!
I fell in love with Fresh. Hip, cool and very veggie, diners can treat themselves to a tasty shake to a macrobiotic bowl. With 3 locations around Moscow, you can grab your healthy pick me up any time of the day!
While I was in Moscow, it was quite hot and I craved a light meal. Avocado hit the spot with it’s yummy raw menu! I devoured my raw pizza and went back for seconds on another visit!
Another tasty find while sightseeing around the city was Sok Cafe. Located by the Tretyakov Gallery, get your art gawking on and then grab a tasty vegan meal! The salads are divine as are their tartars, soups and homemade breads! Don’t miss their dumplings and potato balls!
Last but not least, Groot is great! Whether you’re a Guardians of the Galaxy fan or not, this cafe is a superfoods hit! Featuring great vegan snacks and shakes, it’s a fun place to fuel up!
Stay tuned, next week I head to St. Petersburg!
