Kernville, located on the Kern River in Kern County (can you believe it?) is a quaint and cute, all-American mountain town. Tucked away in the mountains with small towns in the valley below, it’s a great little getaway for nature lovers and fun lovers alike. I love tubing down the chilly river on a hot summer day, enjoying the mountains and trees, wildlife and small town hospitality. And sure, while vegan and gluten free eats are hard to come by in smaller towns, it’s not impossible! Here’s what I found:
I normally can’t go wrong with Italian food. And That’s Italian, right in the town square is not only adorable but also very accommodating to special diets. Offering gluten free pasta and a delicious marinara that goes perfectly on their primavera, you are good to go! Just be sure to go after you’ve played on the river all day so you can spend the rest of the night enjoying some wine on their cute outdoor porch!
A fun place to spend an afternoon is Kern River Brewing Company. Grab a brew and a burger and overlook the funsters having a grand old time on the river below. Order up a veggie burger, load it with veggies and some fries while listening to live music and kickin’ back!
I am always down for chips, guac and a marg, especially after a long day of having fun in the sun. El Rio Mexican, right in the heart of town, serves up good chips and salsa and ginormous burritos that are easily veganizable!
Need a pick me up before a long day on the river? Try Big Blue Bear Cafe! Offering delicious coffees, and yes they have soy milk, start your day off right in this cozy mom and pop cafe ; )
Well, that’s it for Kernville! See you next week on my next adventure!
