What is Vegans in Vegas?
Vegans in Vegas (VinV) is a first-of-its-kind event designed for vegan and veg-interested men. While veganism continues to gain mainstream acceptance, living a vegan lifestyle can be challenging. From TV advertising and mass media, to friends and family, there’s enormous pressure on men to conform to the standard American diet and live “inside the box.” VinV is being organized to help give men of all ages and backgrounds – regardless of their current dietary status – an opportunity to learn from leading experts in the fields of health, nutrition, fitness, and activism, while meeting new friends and enjoying the world famous Las Vegas nightlife and entertainment. We simply ask that attendees pledge to “go veg” during the trip.
Where did the idea for Vegans in Vegas come from?
The idea for VinV came about last summer after speaking with several other vegan men and realizing that one of the toughest challenges we all face is a sense of social isolation that leaves many vegans feeling as though they’re constantly swimming upstream. Let’s face it, being a vegan man can be rough. Unless you’re lucky enough to live in a veg mecca, there’s a good chance you occasionally feel like a bit of a pariah. Over time, this can lead many men to abandon their convictions and return to eating animal products.
With the birth of my son, Connor, in April, I suddenly felt a new sense of urgency to create a brighter future and make it easier for him to eat according to his values. When my vegan friend Joe tied the knot in August, I decided it was the perfect excuse to invite men from across the country and around the world together to create a new social movement and throw open the doors for the next generation to live more compassionately.
Is there a fee to attend?
No, there is no registration fee or other cost to attend the educational sessions. During these tough economic times, we know ever dollar counts. We’re doing everything we can to make the trip as affordable as possible. To do this, we are seeking corporate and private sponsors. Donations are also welcome if you’re feeling generous. Participants will be responsible for paying for their meals, lodging, and group activity costs (tickets, entrance fees, etc.).
Are women permitted to attend?
While I hadn’t initially expected many women would want to attend, it’s become increasing clear that women have a key role to play in helping combat many of the myths and stereotypes that prevent more men from adopting a plant based diet. While the educational portions are being designed specifically to address issues faced by men, we welcome female participants. Just be aware that many topics will be presented from a male prospective in hopes of creating an atmosphere that supports open and frank discussions.
What can I do to help?
I am actively soliciting input on the program and itinerary. If you’d like to volunteer to help plan, market or coordinate, please drop me a note. I’d also ask for your help promoting the event by sharing our website on your Facebook or Twitter page and emailing anyone you know who may be interested in attending, speaking or sponsoring. With your help, we can truly help make history.
I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas!
Ryan and Connor Henn
