One of the best ways to feel more comfortable at the gym is to strike up a conversation with a fellow gym-goer. Since most people tend to shy away from long, awkward conversations with strangers while they are huffing and puffing on the elliptical, keep it short and sweet. Start off with simple pleasantries. Perhaps ask if you can have the machine when they are done, or if they would spot you on weights. From there you can easily move into safe chatter about the weather or the local sports team.
While everyone knows that clothes don’t make the man (or woman). They can play an important role in first impressions. You don’t want to look too overdressed for your workout or too underdressed either. Wear clothes that are practical, comfortable and expendable. Since you’re going to sweat in them, it doesn’t have to be anything too fancy. If all else fails, find a pair of black shorts and a white top. It’s clean, classic and not likely to go out of style.
While you are at the gym, see if you can spot any of these familiar gym personas. Whether it’s the guy who is a little too comfortable in the locker room, or the selfie queen who looks perfect even after an intense workout, one of these personas is sure to appear at your local gym.
