Surviving the Pandemic: Overcoming the Emotional Obstacles of Current Times

Mental and Financial Fallout of the CoronaVirus PandemicThe world didn’t even make it halfway through the year before the coronavirus reared its ugly head and wreaked havoc on everyday living. Just about everyone has been asked to remain home unless for essential or emergent needs, schools have been closed for weeks, and employees have to work from home while others have been laid off until further notice. These necessary changes have, unfortunately, created many obstacles that can weigh heavily on a person’s emotional health.

Though current conditions might make you want to scream, there are things you can start doing to keep your mental health intact. Continue reading for some suggestions.

Health and Safety

One of the biggest challenges people face during this coronavirus pandemic is the health and safety of their families. The viciousness of the virus and the increasing mortality rates causes fear and panic in the hearts and minds of many. Other than staying at home, you can take steps such as those to be described below to reduce your worry and anxiety:

  • Wear Protective Gear – When the need arises to venture out into public, the best defense you have against the coronavirus is protective gear. Make sure that you have face masks that adequately cover your nose and mouth. Keep the masks on while you’re out in public no matter what.

  • Washing Your Hands – Another way to reduce the likelihood of contracting the coronavirus is to wash your hands regularly. You should wash your hands after going out in public, after handling packages or groceries, and before each meal.

  • Eat Well-Balanced Meals – Keeping a strong immune system is necessary to reduce your chances of contracting the virus. It also increases your odds of beating if you do catch it. A large part of doing this means supplying your body with essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. It’s worth pointing out that a healthy diet also helps to improve your mental health. Make sure that you’re consuming at least 3 healthy meals each day.

  • Get Help – Whether you believe you’re experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus or you’re emotionally overwhelmed, it’s important to reach out and get help. You can contact your doctor or local hospital to find out the signs and symptoms and schedule an appointment to get tested. As for your mental health, there are service providers like Bhatia Psychology Group that offer secured phone and video appointments for those in need.

Finances

Are you struggling to make ends meet? Perhaps your household has been reduced to one income or you’re currently unemployed? Whatever the case is, financial stress can be a huge trigger for anxiety and depression. Therefore, it is imperative to do what you can to ease these tensions:

  • Apply for Financial Assistance – The first step would be to apply for financial assistance. Whether your household income has been reduced or is currently nonexistent, there are federal and state programs you can take advantage of. File for unemployment and put in an application for assistance with rent/mortgage, groceries, and utilities.

  • Develop a New Financial Plan – To keep from stressing it is also ideal to assess your current finances and create a new plan. Adjust your budget, reduce unnecessary spending, and if urgent, turn to your emergency savings for added protection and peace of mind.

  • Earn Income From Home – There are plenty of opportunities for you to earn income from the comfort of your home to bridge the gap in your finances. Look for ideas that match with your educational, personal, or professional experience and begin bringing in extra money to ease financial stress.

Relationships

Spending hours-on at home with your significant other can bring about some relational strain. While it can start off being great, all that time together can also bring out the worst. Little things start to get on your nerves, finances cause arguments, all the downtime can cause old wounds to resurface, and some people discover that they have no idea who their partner is anymore. To keep your relationship strong during the pandemic, here are a few things you can do:

  • Communicate – Try spending an hour each day simply talking with your spouse about things unrelated to current circumstances.

  • Try New Things – Learning things as a couple can help rekindle the fire. You can learn a new language, follow along to a cooking show and learn new recipes, or even begin making plans to start a new business.

  • Spend Quality Time – Though caring for the kids and your jobs likely take up a bulk of your time, find some time to just kick back and have fun together. Plan a candlelit dinner, turn on some music and dance together, or binge-watch a television series.

  • Give Each Other Space – Last but not least, too much time together can weigh heavily on your relationship. So, find ways to give each other some space.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused an undue amount of pressure. You’re anxious, stressed out, overwhelmed, and even depressed as you try to figure out how to keep everyone healthy, keep food on the table and bills paid, and sustain your personal relationships. Before you allow all of this to take a toll on you emotionally, utilize the above-mentioned suggestions to overcome these obstacles and provide peace of mind.
