sick studentNobody likes getting sick, especially when it interferes with your education or career by causing you to miss days. While many of us are quick to dismiss unexpected illnesses like the cold or flu as uncontrollable mishaps that can strike anyone at any time, the truth is that you can do plenty to safeguard yourself from sickness and subsequently reduce or eliminate related absences. That being said, here’s a quick guide that will help you stay healthy and present throughout the year.

Hospitable and Comfortable Accommodation

The comfort, cleanliness, and convenience of your environment plays a significant role in your wellbeing, which is why it’s important to opt for the best possible living arrangement when comparing student accommodation. Being located in close proximity to campus will eliminate the stress of having to commute longer distances just to make it to class, which is not only a hassle but also creates the possibility of catching an illness from someone on the bus or train. Comparing options in your city is as easy as searching for phrases like “student accommodation Madrid.” You can also browse Collegiate accommodations’ catalog of locations to get an idea of what’s available in popular areas of the UK, Spain, and Portugal.

Hold Sleep as the Highest Priority

Getting a full night’s sleep is the best way to help your body’s defences stay strong throughout the day. In fact, research has proven that sleep deprived individuals are far more likely to experience all manners of health problems. Getting that full night’s sleep every night can be challenging for students because there are always plenty of distractions to keep you up late. However, staying disciplined and getting to bed at a reasonable hour will definitely pay off if your goal is to make it through the year without a single sick day. Also, mental acuity is dependent on resting the brain, especially after a challenging day of classes, so it is advisable to get at least eight hours of sleep nightly.

Don’t Fall into the Fast Food Trap

When your schedule is packed and you want a quick meal, it can be tempting to opt for the fastest and easiest meal options. Likewise, when you’re surrounded by other students who may not have the best eating habits themselves and are exposed to parties and gatherings where snacks and junk food are abundant, it can be difficult to resist the peer pressure. Although you don’t have to eat a perfect diet, simply getting your daily recommended nutritional values from a variety of whole foods will give put you in a position to avoid illness and perform optimally as a student.

Focus on Fitness and Stress Reduction

Finally, implementing an ongoing exercise regimen and taking steps to reduce stress are two additional ways you can fortify your mind and body. Getting in shape and practicing mental strengthening exercises like meditation, yoga, and puzzle-solving will not only help you stay healthy, it will also help you become more alert, which in turn will lead to better academic performance in the long-term.
