Diabetes is one of the most prevalent illnesses in our country. And sadly, those without access to proper health education and care, succumb to the most wretched of symptoms of this disease. Namely, loss of limbs.
That’s why I was delighted to attend an event at Adventist Health White Memorial here in Los Angeles. Meeting the team behind this state of the art facility and being able to see all that it offers area patients was uplifting. To help reverse the growing number of diabetic patients locally facing amputation, the health care professionals from Adventist Health White Memorial are at the forefront of access and care with their Center for Limb Preservation & Advanced Wound Care. The center offers the newest, most comprehensive services of its kind in the Western United States.
The center is strategically located as seeing the numbers of those affected with diabetes being much higher in this part of the county than any other, really allows them to serve the people most in need. Sadly, low income citizens with diabetes are up to 10 times likelier to lose a limb and is a growing medical threat in the community. However, most amputations are preventable with earlier medical care and that’s what the team at White Memorial have and keep hoping to do. By addressing the underlying diabetic disease before it progresses to limb loss, they will also treat chronic, non-healing wounds that are an early and reliable sign of disease that many times results in amputation.
These services are critical for the population at risk for limb loss, including patients with diabetes, kidney failure, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension, neuropathy, venous insufficiency, ulcers and many other illnesses. By utilizing advanced treatment and prevention modalities, the Center treats wounds and coordinates treatment to prevent future wounds and limb loss.
I was really impressed with what they have been able to achieve in 3 short years and how they are looking to the future, adding more and more treatments and programs to help their patients and families thrive!
