Natural Ways to Reduce Your Risk of Injury While Traveling

travel packing tipsTraveling anywhere can put you at risk of injury if you’re not careful. Spending your time lugging suitcases, walking more than usual, or doing new workouts can all increase your risk of getting hurt. You’ll be going somewhere you aren’t familiar with which also means you need to be extra aware of your surroundings. There are plenty of natural ways to reduce your risk of injury when you take trips, and some of it is about prevention before you go anywhere.

Get Help for Old Injuries Before You Go

If you’re still dealing with an old injury, you are much more prone to an exacerbation of it. While you may be careful with it at home, when you go somewhere new is a different story. You could be so focused on having fun, that you forget that maybe playing a game of beach volleyball or running up a mountain isn’t the best idea just yet. When you know you have a trip planned in several weeks from now, give yourself adequate time to heal, and work with trained professionals like Ascension Performance or another specialized physical therapist to rebuild muscle tone and to promote faster healing after an old injury.

Don’t Overexert Yourself

You know your limits and while it can be tempting to push yourself to new heights while you are on vacation, think again. Even the best athletes should do workouts that are at or slightly below their norm when they travel. The reason is that it’s possible you don’t have everything you need with you to recover and you may not be able to rest effectively far from home. This way you can still maintain your muscle and athletic ability while you’re on a trip, but you also can reduce your risk of injury or getting sick while you travel.

Look for a Chiropractor or Physical Therapist in the Area You’re Visiting

If you’re accustomed to regular physical therapy and chiropractic care, then finding a practitioner in the places you visit can be helpful. You can even schedule an appointment for a chiropractor or physical therapist in Solana Beach, Encinitas, or La Jolla when you head out to visit sunny and beautiful California. Having an appointment already scheduled means that you don’t need to miss a day when you need treatment while you’re away for fun or for business.

And don’t overlook the value of sports massage, which can be beneficial to helping prevent injury from working out or participating in other strenuous activities. Sports massage can assist with recovery from working out, too. Where do you find it while you’re on the road? Chances are, if you’re visiting a gym, they’ll have someone who can provide the service for you.

Try a Cold Shower

After an intense workout, a cold bath or shower can not only reduce swelling, but it can also help your muscles recover more quickly and reduce your risk of injury. Get into the habit of hopping in a cold shower for several minutes after a workout so you can promote healing and health. It’s not comfortable at first, but the results are worth it.

Keep Eating Healthy Foods

It’s hard to eat a normal diet as you do at home when you’re traveling. But eating healthier foods is another way to reduce your risk of injury when you travel. Believe it or not, eating differently than you do at home can mess with your gut and leave you more susceptible to illness and injury. Enjoy some treats and indulge a little, but try and stay on your normal healthy eating as best as possible.

Don’t Overload Your Suitcases

Most people don’t need to bring their entire closet full of clothes when they go on vacation. It’s best not to overload your suitcases when you travel. This can help reduce the risk of back and shoulder injuries. If you’re going for a week, bring just enough clothing for each day. Maybe grab an extra shirt or two just in case you spill something. For a trip of more than that, you can easily find a washing and dryer so that you can do laundry while you are on your trip.

Wear Sturdy, Supportive Shoes

It’s natural to want to bring fun shoes on vacation, especially for women who have a closet filled with cute flats and sexy heels. But when you’re going on a trip, sturdy shoes will help you protect your feet, knees, and back, especially when you’re going to be walking through airports and down city streets. You can wear something fun when you head out to dinner or go to lay out on the beach, but for walking around, you’ll want something more comfortable and practical.
