Minimally Invasive Knee Surgery: The Benefits Of Keyhole Techniques

kneeKnee pain can rob you of your mobility and quality of life. You may struggle to exercise, work, or perform daily activities. If medication, injections, physical therapy, or braces don’t provide relief, surgery may be an option.

But the thought of undergoing a major knee operation can be daunting. You may fear a long, painful recovery. However, advances in minimally invasive techniques, such as keyhole surgery, are completely changing knee surgery.

This results in less pain, quicker recovery, smaller scars, and fewer complications compared to open surgery. Read on to learn how keyhole surgery for knee replacement and other procedures can get you back on your feet faster.

Faster Recovery

With open knee surgery, the surgeon has to cut through skin, muscle, and soft tissue to access the joint. This results in more postoperative pain and a longer recovery.

But, with minimally invasive techniques, the smaller incisions allow for less tissue trauma. There is decreased blood loss, less scarring, and less pain after surgery. You’ll be able to start physical therapy and rehabilitation sooner, and your mobility will improve faster with less downtime.

Less Scarring

For some patients, the cosmetic result of surgery is just as important as restoring function. Large incisions can leave visible scars and deformities around the knee. But with keyhole surgery, the tiny incisions are only about 1-2 inches long. There is less scarring and hardly any visible difference around the knee joint.

Also, your results will look natural rather than surgically altered. This boosts self-confidence for many patients.

Decreased Risk Of Infection

Anytime the body is cut open, and tissues are exposed, there is a risk of infection. The larger the incision, the higher the infection risk.

With smaller keyhole incisions, less of the joint is exposed to air and contaminants during surgery. This lowers the chances of developing a painful postoperative infection that could require further treatment with antibiotics or even additional surgery.

Outpatient Procedure

Since keyhole surgery is less invasive, most patients can go home the same day. There is less trauma to the body, helping you recover faster and feel well enough to leave the hospital within 24 hours.

Open knee surgery usually requires a hospital stay of 2-3 days. With quicker discharge, you can sleep in your own bed and start physical therapy as an outpatient sooner.

Less Blood Loss

During traditional open knee surgery, there can be significant blood loss as the surgeon cuts through soft tissues. This often requires transfusions to replace lost blood. But with smaller incisions, there is only minimal blood loss.

Transfusions are rarely necessary. Less blood loss means fewer complications and a faster recovery.

Quicker Return To Normal Activities

Since keyhole techniques allow for quicker recovery, patients can return to daily activities sooner. Within just 1-2 weeks, many patients no longer need ambulatory aids like crutches or walkers.

Simple activities become easier within the first month after surgery. More strenuous activities like exercise or sports may be possible in just 6-8 weeks.

Compare this to 3-6 months of recovery time with open procedures. The faster recovery gets you back on your feet doing the activities you love.

Reduced Postoperative Pain

Imagine undergoing a major knee surgery through an incision just half an inch long! With less surgical trauma to tissues, most patients experience significantly less pain after minimally invasive procedures.

This reduces or even eliminates the need for pain medications like opioids. Less pain makes physical therapy easier, so you recover normal function faster. With keyhole techniques, you’re unlikely to have chronic knee pain.

Lower Risk Of Complications

The complication rate for minimally invasive knee surgery ranges from 1-2%, considerably lower than open procedures. There are fewer issues like blood clots, wound infections, pneumonia, or urinary tract infections after keyhole surgery.

The smaller incisions lead to less anatomical disruption. Preserving more soft tissue around the knee joint leads to better outcomes.

Improved Accuracy

Surgeons use advanced precision instruments like robotic arm assistance and computer navigation to perform knee replacements through tiny incisions. These technologies provide real-time guidance and feedback to accurately place components in the ideal position.

Precision results in better function and more natural knee movement after surgery. Accuracy is one of the biggest advantages of keyhole techniques.

Faster Hospital Discharge

Since keyhole surgery requires smaller incisions and causes less trauma, you’ll likely meet hospital discharge criteria much sooner. Patients are typically able to go home within 24 hours since the procedure is less taxing on the body.

This allows you to recover in the comfort of your own home rather than an unfamiliar hospital room. Outpatient physical therapy can begin right away.

Preserved Muscle Function

Open knee surgery involves cutting through the quadriceps muscle on the front of the thigh. This leads to weakness, stiffness, and loss of muscle function, which can be permanent.

However, with minimally invasive techniques, the quadriceps remain intact. Preserving the extensor mechanism and musculature around the knee joint results in better function after surgery.

Final Thoughts

Minimally invasive knee surgery offers considerable benefits over traditional open procedures. From decreased pain and faster recovery to smaller scars and fewer complications, keyhole techniques provide superior results. If you’re suffering from knee arthritis, ligament tears, or other problems, be sure to ask your surgeon about minimally invasive options.

Advancements in precision technology now allow most knee conditions to be treated with smaller incisions. Instead of dreading a long recovery after surgery, you can look forward to getting back on your feet quickly.
