grown local walmartThe holiday season is upon us and that means baking, cooking and hosting season is here! From pies and cookies, to cocktails and entrees, this time of year means spending lots of time at the market and cooking for more than just your household.

However, despite the volume of cooking, we can still make good choices when it comes to our food purchases. From organic to locally sourced, you don’t have to sacrifice your budget, time or lifestyle over the holidays because Walmart has everything you need to make it a great holiday season for all!

Many people are surprised to learn you can buy locally grown produce in Walmart stores. And by locally grown, they mean produce that is bought and sold right in the same state. So cool, right? Walmart offers fresh produce by delivering produce right from farms to store shelves by purchasing fruits and vegetables directly from growers, which not only helps the growers, it helps the community.

Walmart is a store of the community. Whether it be the locally-sourced merchandise carried in store, or the programs they invest in outside the stores, Walmart celebrates each of the communities they call their own.walmart local

Walmart backs its fresh produce promise with a 100 percent money-back guarantee. If customers are not completely satisfied with Walmart’s produce, they can bring back their receipt for a full refund. No questions asked and no need to bring back the produce. How helpful is that during the stressful holiday season?

Walmart’s fresh produce promise follows their commitments to make food healthier and healthier food more affordable. As part of that commitment, Walmart has saved customers more than $2.3 billion over the last two years on fresh fruits and vegetables in produce sections across the country.

And if customers are tight on time, like over the busy holiday season, they can order fresh groceries online with same-day pickup! Walmart’s online grocery service provides great value, friendly service and fresh groceries on your schedule. local apples walmart

So in honor of the incredible local produce available at my local California Walmart, I chose to create a fun seasonal recipe with a twist! My local Walmart was featuring delicious local Gala Apples so I created super fun vegan apple ginger pie-kies!

Cookies:

  • 1/2 cup vegan butter, softened
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 vegan egg substitute
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup apples, peeled and chopped very fine or grated
  • 1/4 cup vegan ginger chews, finely chopped
  • 1 1/4 cup gluten free all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

Topping mix

  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground gingervegan apple ginger cookie recipe
Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
With a hand mixer cream the sugar and butter together for about 2 minutes.
Stir in the prepared egg substitute, vanilla, ginger chews and apple.
In a separate bowl sift together the flour, salt and baking powder.
Combine the dry mixture with the wet mixture and just blend.
Scoop into heaping tablespoons full and roll into balls.
To make the topping, combine the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger in a small bowl.
Now take each of the cookie balls and roll each ball in the sugar/cinnamon mixture.

Place on the parchment covered baking sheet about 2″ apart then flatten.

Place in oven and bake for 12-15 minutes.

Do not over bake. They will be a little soft when they are removed from the oven but they will harden.
Remove to a rack to cool. Enjoy!
