Invisalign vs. Braces: The Pros and Cons Explained

bracesThere are two ways to straighten crooked teeth. Metal braces have been the gold standard for years, but another more discreet option is now available. Many find it challenging to decide on a straightening treatment option. Both have pros and cons. Learning about the pros and cons of Invisalign and braces is critical for those who want a straighter, more attractive smile.

Research Both Options Carefully

The Bridgewater Dental’s orthodontist recommends that patients research carefully to learn about the two options for straightening their teeth. It is also essential to go through a consultation appointment with the orthodontist to determine which will offer the most effective change. While most people will see improvements with metal braces, Invisalign is not for everyone and may not help severe alignment issues, especially those involving the jaw.

The Pros and Cons of Invisalign

Invisalign is a transparent braces system with customized aligners worn for two weeks and then thrown away. Exploring the pros and cons of Invisalign will help patients determine if this clear aligner treatment will improve their smiles.

Pros of Invisalign

  • Many people choose Invisalign because the aligners seem to disappear next to the teeth, so no one notices them.
  • Patients like that they can remove their clear plastic aligners when brushing or flossing their teeth.
  • Another pro of Invisalign is that there are fewer dental appointment consultations.
  • Most choose Invisalign because the aligners are much more comfortable than metal braces.

Cons of Invisalign

  • Patients must be disciplined to keep up with treatment because their teeth will not respond if they forget to wear their aligners daily.
  • There is an inconvenience factor because you must remove the aligners before eating and brush your teeth before putting the aligner back in place.
  • Invisalign does not work for everyone. Severe alignment issues require further orthodontic intervention, including metal braces and possible surgical correction.

The Pros and Cons of Braces

Modern metal braces have been around since 1819. There are traditional braces and newer lingual braces available. An orthodontist will explain the available treatment options and help patients determine the most effective one.

Pros of Braces

  • Traditional metal braces are suitable for every type of alignment issue, regardless of severity.
  • Braces are more effective at creating a perfect result of straightened teeth.
  • Multiple types of braces are available, including those with ceramic that blend in well with the teeth.
  • The treatment time can be much faster with braces over Invisalign.

Cons of Braces

  • Many people do not like wearing braces because they do not want a mouth full of metal.
  • Brushing and flossing can be challenging with metal braces in place.
  • Those wearing braces may be unable to enjoy some types of foods.
  • Patients need regular adjustments throughout their treatment with braces.

Schedule an Orthodontic Consultation

Those who need their teeth aligned should first schedule a consultation with the orthodontist to determine their treatment options. While braces work for everyone, Invisalign is only for teens and adults and does not correct serious alignment issues that require further orthodontic intervention.

Straightened teeth help people chew and talk more effectively. They will also increase your confidence. Schedule an orthodontic appointment today to go through a thorough evaluation. The orthodontist will discuss your treatment options and help you decide on the best intervention for your smile.
