earsOur ears are an essential part of our body and the organ that enables us to hear. Therefore, it is very important that we know how to take care of our ears and do our utmost to ensure they are protected and healthy. However, there are many myths surrounding our ears and how we should take care of them, which can lead to infections and permanent damage. Having problems with our ears can not only be extremely painful, but it can also cause significant complications, including hearing loss and balance issues such as vertigo.

Therefore, we have put together this useful guide, telling you everything you need to know about how to take care of your ears.

Use Earplugs Around Loud Noises

It can be dangerous for our ears to be exposed to loud noises for long periods of time, so it is important that you protect your ears wherever possible. Research has found that those who work in loud environments are more likely to suffer from noise-induced hearing loss later on in life. Therefore, you should carry earplugs with you if you know that you are going to be exposed to significantly loud noises. In fact, any type of noise that forces you to strain to be heard by the person next to you, such as music concerts, lawn mowers, music in clubs, and chainsaws, can be damaging to your ears. This is because they create a dangerous level of sound. While you may not initially notice the damage that being exposed to loud music can create, it will become worse over time. So, you should be sure to get earplugs for you to use. They are comfortable to wear and easy to get hold of, so it’s a no-brainer!

Allow for Recovery Time

However, if you have been exposed to loud noises for a long period of time, such as a night out in a loud bar or attending a music concert, then you should allow your ears time to recover. Wherever possible, you should take some time away from the noise so that you have some time away from the noise. This may include going outside the club for 10 minutes just to give your ears a break. While this may sound like an extreme measure, it is important that we don’t take our ears for granted and ensure that we take the time to look after them.

Seek Medical Attention Needed

It is important that you seek medical attention whenever you start to have problems with your ears. Many of us take our ears for granted, but regularly visiting our doctor is a great way to ensure that our ears are healthy, and it decreases the risk of us later suffering from hearing loss. For example, you can attend the Harley Street ear clinic, which is well known for being one of the best ear specialists in London. The trained specialists at the 150 Harley Street ear clinic can help you with a range of issues from an ear wax blockage to tinnitus.

Avoid Unsafe Volumes

While sometimes you don’t have control over the noise that you and your ears are being exposed to, many of us choose to listen to music and the television at unsafe volumes. You should lower the volume of any device you use to listen to music through to ensure that you aren’t damaging your ears. Many of us are guilty of turning our radios up full blast in the car on our commute to work in the mornings to block out the noise from other cars and the world outside. But this can have serious consequences on our hearing, so be sure to turn the volume down to a reasonable level.

Don’t Put Things in Your Ears

Many people aren’t aware of this, but you should never put anything inside your ear unless told to by your doctor. This is because it can make any problem you are experiencing a lot worse. For example, if you are suffering from a build-up of ear wax, then your initial reaction may be to try and get it out. However, using a cotton swab, for example, can result in you pushing the wax further down your ear canal, exacerbating the problem. Many people don’t know this, but the ear is a self-cleaning organ and ear wax prevents other harmful substances such as dust entering our ear canal. If you feel like you have excess ear wax, then you should use a damp towel to clean around your ear but make sure that you are gentle.

It is important that you are proactive when it comes to looking after your ears, as hearing is one of the main senses that we use daily and without it, we could suffer a significant decline in our quality of life.
