How to Lose Weight as a Couple, Even with Different Diets

lose weight as coupleHaving someone journey through new seasons of life with you is often what makes that season the best of all! This is true in many instances, but especially when striving toward weight loss. Many people find their best weight loss success when they decide to lose weight with the one they love the most. If you know how to navigate the weight loss world together, then you will be able to reap the benefits for years to come.

Accept that you can’t follow the same plan

One of the most important things to bear in mind is that our bodies are  different and there is no one size fits all when it comes to losing weight. While cutting calories and keeping cravings at bay is important for everyone, an exercise routine and healthy diet for men may not work for their partner. This means that while you might exercise together, your meals should not be the same, especially portions. This will also be similar to the types of exercise you are doing, so once you accept that your journeys will not be the same, it makes it easier than struggling with the same plan.

Exercise together

Though it is likely that you may prefer different types of exercise to your partner, that doesn’t mean you can’t find some time to exercise with each other. This is a great way to find some quality time together and reconnect after a long day.  Try going on evening runs or wind down with yoga before bed, which will help your work on your core and mental strength. It is also a great way of giving each other a helping hand on days where exercise seems like a world away.

Motivate each other

Motivating each other through exercise is always beneficial, but losing weight as a couple means you can also give each other emotional support in tough times. If you have hit a plateau, having someone there to be your cheerleader and remind you of how far you’ve come can help you persevere. If you have someone there to compete with, this can also provide some healthy motivation to be healthier.

Don’t be too competitive

There is nothing wrong with some healthy competition, but if this becomes paramount to your success, then it’s wise to take a step back. Too much or  aggressive competition can cause unnecessary friction, and can contribute to an unhealthy mindset. If one of you loses weight quicker, which is usually true for men, don’t take this as a sign you aren’t succeeding. Ultimately, you aren’t losing weight to beat your partner, but to create a healthier, happier you. It’s good to remind yourself that you are proud of your partner and yourself, but that their success is not the key to yours.
