How to Ensure You Are Getting the Most Out of Your Physical Therapy Sessions

physical therapyHave you been in an accident recently, had surgery, or hurt yourself when doing sports or working out? Why not try physical therapy? If you have not been to these sessions before, how can physical therapy help you? According to the National Health Institute, physical therapy relieves pain, strengthens weak muscles, and improves mobility. It also teaches pain patients what they can do by themselves to improve their overall health.

Physical therapy can be a powerful tool in speeding up your recovery after a traumatic injury or surgical procedure. However, it would be best to approach treatment with an open mind and commitment to reap its benefits. This post will explore how to ensure you get the most out of physical therapy to speed up recovery and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Find the Right Therapist

Your path to recovery through physical therapy begins with who you choose as your guide. As Forbes reports, consider your specific needs when searching for a physical therapist. You want a professional who will understand what you need to recover and work with you throughout the healing process. The location, therapist’s credentials, and specialty area are vital factors that will guide you in determining whether they are ideal.

With that said, make sure your therapist can conduct a physical examination and evaluate your joint motion, flexibility, and movement. Find out if the therapist offers a clinical diagnosis and treatment plan for short-term and long-term care. Does the professional specialize in a specific area? For instance, if you are struggling with musculoskeletal injuries that involve muscle, ligament, bone, and joint pain, can your preferred therapist offer orthopedic therapy? Likewise, if you are in search of treatment for pain linked to Alzheimer’s disease, brain injury, or Parkinson’s disease, then your therapist must know about neurological therapy.

Be Open About Your Physical Health

Before starting therapy, your therapist will want to know your physical history. What does this mean? You need to explain where you are experiencing the pain. When it started and the underlying cause. Talk about the activities that caused the injuries or made the pain worse.

The information you share with your therapist will help them customize your treatment plan. As reported by OKspinepain.com, doctors with a specialty in chronic pain management know every patient is unique and will collaborate with you to understand your pain and tailor plans that address the root cause.

Since physical therapy entails exercise, your therapists will focus on physical activities that improve your health and ability to move. These exercises range from muscle-strengthening workouts to water aerobics, walking, jogging, stair-climbing, and side walking. An experienced physical therapist could also combine workouts with massage therapy to ensure you get the treatment you deserve to lower your pain.

Set Realistic Goals

There is no better way to make the most of physical therapy than to set clear goals. Since you will not work alone, let your therapist know what you intend to achieve when attending sessions. Your goals could be as simple as wanting to resume everyday activities like standing and walking or just living a pain-free life. You could also aim to achieve a greater goal, like returning to extreme sports. Whatever goals you have, sharing them with your therapist helps solidify your treatment plan.

Never Skip Sessions

Sometimes, you may feel like skipping sessions because of soreness or pain. However, failure to attend a single session could worsen the pain and cause more damage to your overall well-being. Instead, go into the therapist’s office and tell them of the pain or soreness you are experiencing. That way, they can evaluate your health to determine what is causing the pain. If a specific physical activity is making the pain worse, your therapist can make some adjustments to your workout regimen.

Note that the most disciplined patients enjoy the perks of physical therapy. As highlighted on Medical News Today, physical therapy helps individuals manage pain without using opioids and recover from stroke, injury, and paralysis. It could also improve balance, avoid surgery, and enhance mobility.

Complete Your Homework

You should know that physical therapy is only beneficial when you do it every day. How do you stick to daily workouts when scheduled therapy sessions occur twice or thrice weekly? During those days you do not have an appointment, there are exercises you can do alone. Your physical therapist will offer a workout regimen you must follow outside sessions. It is easy to overlook the importance of exercising when your therapist is not around. But you risk seeing any improvements and spending more time and money in therapy.

With that in mind, creating a dedicated space for workouts is crucial. You could go to the gym or find space in your house for daily exercises and stretches. Time commitment is another factor worth considering. While it is wise to do your exercises simultaneously daily, work or other issues may disrupt your schedule. You should find time every day for your workouts.

Conclusion

Physical therapy could be the one thing you need to manage pain after a traumatic accident, surgery, or sports-related injury. However, you must follow a few steps to maximize this pain management technique. First, you must locate a physical therapist fit for your unique needs. Second, you must provide detailed information about your history of pain and how it affects your life. Next, have goals and share them with your therapist. And most importantly, be disciplined by following instructions, sticking to the recommended workout regimen, and attending sessions.
