How to Best Protect Your Teeth

healthy teethSweets are a big part of some people’s lifestyles. Yet, in most cases, they contribute to oral health problems, some of which are preventable. Read on to identify how to protect your teeth.

Stay on Top of Your Oral Hygiene Habits

Eating too many sugary foods, amongst other poor dietary habits, is a major contributor to oral diseases such as cavities and gum disease. Studies show that loss of teeth in adults over 35 is more due to periodontal disease than cavities. However, you don’t have to worry about these effects if you maintain an active daily oral health care routine. While brushing after every meal is the best practice, dentists recommend brushing at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque. Ensure you clean all sides of the tooth and to clean your whole mouth.

Flossing once a day is equally important as it removes food particles stuck between teeth that brushing couldn’t, thus preventing the buildup of plaque and harmful bacteria. If you have trouble getting floss between teeth, try using a floss pick or a different brand of waxed floss.

Rinse Mouth After Eating Sugary Foods

Swishing your mouth with water can eliminate some residue and help keep tooth decay at bay. It also gets rid of harmful bacteria in the mouth. The sooner you rinse your mouth with water, the better your oral health can be since harmful bacteria will have little time to act on your tooth.

Besides being good for overall health, water is also suitable for oral health. Water forms part of the saliva that keeps the mouth moist and aids in chewing. Saliva contains the amylase enzyme that breaks down foods in the mouth.. White blood cells are saliva constituents that fight against oral bacteria. A mouthwash rinse can boost your teeth cleaning routine with additional germ-cleaning and plaque-preventing properties, too.

Regular Dental Visits

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, 33% of people who visit orthodontic clinics for their teeth and jaw issues are adults. If you don’t practice good dental hyigeine at home, tooth discoloration may occur as you cannot clean under your braces easily..

Dentists recommend that a person goes for a dental checkup at least twice a year for cleanings and checkups. Plaque is a result of sugar molecules in saliva and bacteria that are present in the mouth. It breaks down tooth enamel leading to cavities that are sometimes painful. Professional cleaning removes calculus that may form after consuming many sugary foods. And while at the dentist’s, ask for a caries activity test. It’s an evidence-based approach to preventing, reversing, and treating dental caries. People that regularly consume sugary foods are at high-risk, and dentists will recommend home care or treatment plans.

Eat Sweets in Moderation

The bakery business is experiencing steady growth, with some studies showing that retail bakeries’ sales are projected to grow 5% annually. If you’re among those who can’t resist buying a treat every time you pass the bakery, consider your next purchase carefully. Snacks are different, and some are better health-wise than others. Sticky sweets stay longer in the mouth and harmful bacteria produce acid wastes that contribute to tooth decay. Choosing a healthier option is ultimately better for your oral health. Read nutritional labels on foods so you can eat more nutritious options.

If you’re suffering from a sweet tooth, consider consuming treats moderately. While one can’t completely do away with sweet snacks, diet balancing is the only way to manage eating habits. Meal prepping, too, reduces the chances of bingeing on desserts.

To help keep your teeth in good shape and prevent cavities, make sure to get them cleaned regularly and practice proper dental hygiene.
