Hearing loss can cause all kinds of problems, ranging from the mild to the more severe, and it’s far more than what you might think – it’s more than just people struggling to catch words or sounds, for example. What it actually is is a struggle with mental health as well as the hearing issues themselves, and hearing loss can truly affect someone’s mental health is many different and negative ways. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what we mean and just how hearing loss can affect your mental health.
Social Withdrawal
One of the biggest problems that people with hearing loss might find is that they start to withdraw from seeing their friends and family or even just going out and about and being part of society in general. That happens because when it gets more and more difficult to follow conversations or hear other sounds (including ones that can keep us safe, such as traffic, for example), it can become embarrassing to be in other people’s company – you’ll miss conversations altogether or misunderstand what’s happening, and you won’t feel great about leaving the house to socialize.
This doesn’t sound like a good thing in general, but the fact is that if you become more isolated, that’s going to negatively affect your mental health – you’ll feel lonely, and that can lead to depression. That’s why the best thing to do is to do your best to prevent hearing loss with these healthy habits so you don’t have to go through this upsetting situation.
Mental Fatigue
Something else that can cause mental health issues when it comes to your hearing loss is mental fatigue. If you’ve never heard of it you certainly won’t be alone, but that doesn’t mean it’s something you can just work through without any ill effects – mental fatigue is a hugely problematic side effect of untreated hearing loss.
Mental fatigue is what happens when you’re constantly straining to understand speech and sounds – it’s literally tiring your brain out, and it makes other mental work much more difficult. You’re suffering from cognitive overload, and that’s going to leave you feeling drained, lacking concentration, having problems with your memory, and even being unable to do simple daily tasks if it goes on too long. And of course, that’s going to lead to some mental health issues as well.
Strained Relationships
Although it’s your hearing that will be affected, and although it’s your mental health we’re focusing on, it’s important to know that if you let your hearing loss go on and don’t do anything about it, your relationships might suffer. In fact, it’s highly likely that they will suffer. And what happens when you’re having relationship problems (whether they’re romantic or platonic)? Your mental health suffers.
Hearing loss means that communication breakdowns can strain relationships, leading to a lot of frustration and maybe even resentment. You’ll experience stress, and so will the people around you, so why not get your hearing checked and get treatment if need be? It’s a much better option.
