Many times, we live in denial. We go through life ignoring problems and stuffing down our feelings by using food as a comfort to mask unhappy thoughts. When having demons in one form or another and wanting to address them, they must be approached from a place of honesty.
Using softeners to make things seem less than they are doesn’t really help. It’s a coping mechanism to reduce the pain felt when life isn’t going as well as desired.
Getting Healthier through Fitness
Maybe you’re slim but not fit. You cannot stretch your legs easily or go up a flight of stairs without being winded. People assume that you’re fit because you’re slim, but you know different. Or, you’re very obviously overweight or obese and you’ve finally decided that enough is enough.
Getting fit through fitness is a better approach than diet alone.
For fitness improvement and subsequent weight loss to succeed, you must understand that it comes gradually. The longer you’ve been on the sidelines, the more reluctant your body (or you) will be to participate in some exercise. Don’t let this stop you. Choose an exercise (or sport) that you enjoy and take the first step. Then the next one. Make it a new habit, a new routine, and adjust your week to incorporate exercise. Set a sensible activity and weight loss goal, but also look for fitness wins too. Longer stretches, better flexibility, faster walking or running times, etc.
Improving Wellness through Diet
We often poison ourselves slowly through our choice of food and drink. What we consume and how we treat our bodies through diet affects our overall wellness. It’s best to go back to the fundamentals with food. Using raw ingredients to prepare healthy, nutritious meals. Avoiding packaged or processed foods that are so far away from what once grew and came out of the ground as to be wholly unrecognizable.
Only when simplifying our diet can we regain our palette. We can then better appreciate just how much extra added salt and sugar was in what we were eating daily. Our taste buds surprisingly notice subtle flavors in a way that they didn’t before going back to basics. Then add back sensible choices to make meal plans more interesting while avoid bringing bad eating habits back again.
Addressing Addictions Head-on
Being willing to address any addictions is the only way to proceed sensibly. The difficult part of attending one of the San Diego rehab centers is that you must be ready to surrender and accept being powerless over the addiction. Only when reaching this level of acceptance will you accept help. It’s extremely difficult to shake off an addiction if you’re not yet decided it’s what you want. The reason is simple: winning over an addiction is genuinely difficult.
The acceptance often comes out of the reality that you’ve tried to get sober, get slimmer or healthier on your own and have likely failed previously, often many times. It’s time to try something different if what you’re doing isn’t working. The advice works equally well for weight loss, addictions, or improved wellness. Just having the vision of a better future and being willing to fight hard to reach it, is as good a place to start as any.
