Everything You Need to Know About Mesothelioma

MesotheliomaYou might probably have come across the word ‘mesothelioma’ sometime in the past but didn’t bother to dig in further. And while we wish you never get to experience this cancer, still, it is imperative to have a thorough understanding and intimate knowledge about the disease. Mesothelioma is a kind of lung cancer that impacts the layer of tissues covering the internal body organs. The predominant cause of Mesothelioma is the naturally occurring fiber, asbestos. The inhalation of asbestos causes inflammation in the lungs area, which produces abnormal cells in the body. These cells buildup fluid between the thoracic cage and lungs as soon as they develop.

It is relevant to note that different kinds of asbestos can develop different types of mesothelioma cancer. For instance, when asbestos gets jammed at the covering of the lungs, pleura, it causes pleural Mesothelioma. And if these fibers glue to the lining of the abdominal region, peritoneum, it can induce cancer.

Unfortunately, the concept of Mesothelioma was virtually anonymous up until the 20th century. As a result, people used to have little to almost zero knowledge about this aggressive cancer. However, as industrialization began, so did the mesothelioma cases increased. Many people believe that men are more prone to this disease since the incident rate is higher in males. The increased preponderance rate might be because men usually work in asbestos-affected areas. However, it is too early to accept it without any solid evidence.

  • Risk Factors

When it comes to the risk factors of Mesothelioma, the construction sites, home renovation areas, and military facilities can be a potential threat. Do you or your loved one have exposure to asbestos due to the negligent behavior of companies? In that case, it is your legal right to file a lawsuit to fight such companies. That way, you can learn more about the compensation you deserve and hold the company accountable. Governmental bodies continually emphasize asbestos removal. However, if companies still fail to comply with the safety procedures, they are at fault.

Already the diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer is overwhelming. Since it is pernicious and deadly by nature, Mesothelioma can take a massive toll on mental and emotional health. Now add the high treatment costs burden to the already full plate. However, with expert attorney support at your end, you won’t have to worry about the obligations of the lawsuit. Instead, you can focus on your recovery process.

  • Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of Mesothelioma coincide with many other minor illnesses. That’s why some people tend to ignore or take the symptoms lightly during the initial stages. However, suppose you face some of the following symptoms for a long time or have a history of asbestos exposure. In that case, it’s better to consult a medical practitioner immediately. Early detection of Mesothelioma can provide you with the opportunity of life-prolonging treatments which might be inaccessible during the final stages of cancer.

The following are the signs of Mesothelioma according to the type of cancer:

Pleural Mesothelioma

  • Cough
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Lumps on arms and face
  • Blood cough
  • Fatigue
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Weak muscles

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

  • Inappetence
  • Swelling problems
  • Significant weight-loss
  • Nausea and vomiting issues
  • Diarrhea and constipation
  • Cold sweats

Pericardial Mesothelioma

  • Erratic heartbeat
  • Heart murmurs
  • Weak body
  • Intense cough
  • Constant fever
  • Chest pain
  • Stage-wise Mesothelioma Symptoms

Mesothelioma cancer can range from stage 1 to stage 4. The size, location of the tumor, and the extent to which it spreads depend on the stage it falls in. Patients generally don’t encounter any significant signs of Mesothelioma during the initial stages when the tumor size is small. Cancer becomes dangerous only when it reaches stage 3 or 4, in which the size gets relatively larger. As the tumor develops, it exerts pressure and affects the close by tissues and organs, thus making tissues more compact. As a result, tissues cease to work, and organs break down.

Below is the list of mesothelioma symptoms according to the stage:

Stage 1 and 2

  • Labored breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Dry wheezing
  • Fluid accumulation

Stage 3 and 4

  • Poor appetite
  • Consistent pain
  • Blood clots
  • Notable weight loss
  • Anemia

  • Treatments

Since Mesothelioma spreads aggressively, most patients often came to know about their illness at the advanced stage. As a result, it is almost impossible to remove cancer from the body. That is why the cure for Mesothelioma depends on several factors such as cancer stage, patient’s personal preference, and health condition. Some of the possible treatment options are:

  • Surgery

If a patient is lucky enough to get diagnosed with Mesothelioma early, oncologists can treat their cancer with surgery. The cancer stage and location of Mesothelioma are the key factors that help surgeons decide which surgical procedures to remove cancer.

  • Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the best treatment option recommended by doctors to cure mesothelioma patients who aren’t eligible for surgery. Systematic chemotherapy can either kill entirely or slow down the growth of cancer cells from dividing further in the body and extends the life period. In addition, there are different ways to inject the drug into the body, such as through the mouth, veins, muscles, or directly placed at the infected position.

Furthermore, other treatment options to either remove cancer cells or reduce symptoms include radiation, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.

Final Words

Just the thought of Mesothelioma is enough to cause the chills to run down the spine. People who have been recently diagnosed with this cancer get profoundly shaken by the revelation. And even for some resilient people, it becomes exceptionally challenging to cope with stressful emotions. To avoid going through such situations, everyone must abide by the workplace safety guidelines and learn more about the risk factors of this disease. Also, if you recently have asbestos exposure, instead of being in a state of denial, be preemptive and get medical checkups done.
