Effective Ways to Combat Anxiety

anxietyMost people deal with anxiety to some degree. Whether it’s related to personal matters, career concerns or academic woes, anxiety is often a natural response to stressful situations. While it’s perfectly natural to experience anxiety under certain circumstances, feeling consumed by it on a constant basis is a problem that should be addressed posthaste. If left unchecked, anxiety has the power to overtake one’s entire life and leave them in a perpetual state of anxiousness. Anyone for whom anxiety has become a way of life is urged to consider the following pointers.

Enlist the Aid of a Good Therapist

Nearly everyone grappling with anxiety – or any type of mental affliction, for that matter – has been advised to seek therapy at one time or another. Many anxiety sufferers view this response as a cop-out on the part of friends and family members. In their minds, being told to go to therapy is tantamount to their closest confidantes washing their hands of the matter. While it’s true that “Go to therapy” is sometimes a phrase uttered out of exasperation, there’s a fair amount of wisdom in this seemingly simple piece of advice.

Anxiety often becomes unmanageable as a result of feelings being bottled up. When people feel as if they’re unable to discuss their problems with anyone, anxiety and depression are practically guaranteed to worsen. While it can be comforting to share your feelings with close friends and family members, these individuals generally aren’t as equipped to provide lasting relief as licensed professionals. Of course, this isn’t to say that you should settle for just any therapist. When searching for the right one, look for people with experience treating your specific type of anxiety.

Consider Natural Remedies

Depending on the degree of your anxiety, a therapist may recommend anti-anxiety medications. Unsurprisingly, not all anxiety sufferers are equally amenable to taking these medications, as many of them carry inconvenient side effects. Of course, this isn’t to say that all anti-anxiety meds are bad. In fact, many anxiety sufferers have had tremendous success with them.

Still, if you’re not crazy about the idea of taking prescription anti-anxiety drugs, natural remedies may be worth considering. For example, various CBD products have been shown to effectively quell anxiety and calm the mind. Potential side effects are very minor – especially when compared to prescription meds – and if taken properly, these products are unlikely to trigger addiction.

Engage in Regular Exercise

When trapped in the throes of anxiety, exercise is liable to be among the last things on your mind. While picking yourself up and refocusing your energy may prove challenging, doing so can go a long way in quieting anxiety. Exercise releases endorphins, which can trigger positive feelings in the body and help calm the mind. This isn’t to say that you should turn working out into an obsession, but devoting at least 30 minutes each day to physical activity can be a great way to keep anxiety at bay. Although finding the time and energy to devote to regular exercise may initially prove difficult, your daily workout will quickly become something to which you look forward. Whether it’s strength training, jogging or just taking a leisurely stroll, regular exercise can be a boon to your fight against anxiety.

Practice Mindfulness

In recent years, mindfulness has become an increasingly popular way to deal with anxiety. Since many anxiety sufferers spend a great deal of time worrying about things that occurred in the past and things they believe will happen in the future, they often lose sight of the present moment. Conversely, practicing mindfulness can help anxiety sufferers remain grounded and focus on the present, thus enabling them to place certain worries in the proper perspective. Mindfulness can be particularly effective when paired with meditation and deep breathing techniques.

As anyone who’s wrestled with anxiety can attest, this affliction can be a tough nut to crack. Chronic anxiety fills one’s mind with stressful thoughts and can have a number of adverse impacts on physical health. If anxiety has been allowed to run rampant and dominate every facet of your life, there’s no time like the present to take back the reins. While combating anxiety is seldom easy, it’s often a necessary step one must take in regaining control of their life.
