It’s a Castle But A Quiet One — Creating a Calm Home

Creating a Calm HomeAfter a busy day, it’s important to step through your front door and let go of your stresses and strains. Unfortunately, sometimes stepping into your home can be as stressful as the day you’re trying to escape.

You can ensure that the rooms of the home are soothing, however, with simple home furniture techniques and tips. Apply them and you can transform your abode into a real oasis of calm.

Reduce visual clutter

When you look around your home, do you see lots of visual clutter? Colors, patterns and surfaces everywhere? We’re not talking about belongings lying around, but about the way your home is furnished. If there are many different styles and patterns all competing with each other, this can be a little jarring. Simplify your decor, paring down the colors, and adding clean lines and humble furnishings for maximum calm.

Reduce the actual clutter

Are there personal belongings scattered all over the place? Is the kitchen sideboard clogged with filthy dishes? Consider investing in larger storage solutions, or implementing a chore timetable for you and your family to ensure that everything is as tidy as possible.

Bedroom = sleep

Your bedroom should be for sleeping. Avoid using it as a study space or a television room: a good night’s sleep is a recipe for calm days. To sleep well, your mind must associate your bedroom with relaxation, not work or entertainment.

This room should be your sanctuary: you spend around eight hours of your time in it every single day, so make it a peaceful environment. Choose tranquil colors, the nicest bed you can afford, and use smart storage solutions to reduce clutter.

Breathe life into the room

Add flowers and plants around your home to inject life into your living space. Not only are they wonderful decoration, they also bring a certain zest to each room. Just don’t forget to keep them fed and watered.

Light up your home

Think about your lighting arrangements: a single overhead light can be very draining, and bad for your eyes as well as your mood. Install lamps in strategic parts of the room, and consider the voltage of the bulbs you choose, along with their color. Use the overhead light only when needed, and you’ll reduce the overhead glare of a ceiling light.

Invest in furniture

Buy good quality furniture. Nothing is more stressful (or annoying!) than sitting at a wobbly table, or being afraid that the chair you’re sitting in might collapse at any minute. When you’re choosing, take into account the potential for visual and actual clutter, and select furniture that will minimize clutter and accentuate the clean lines you may need for calm.

A person’s home is their castle, but each home is different. Take a good look around yours to gain a perspective of what you need to feel calmer in your sanctuary and create your calm home.

    Thank you for these tips. The first three really resonate with me … I need to be without clutter to feel calm. Too much stuff is just too much stimulation for my brain. I also believe in using the bedroom for sleep and not for TV, etc.

    Now that I’ve been homeless for two years and travelling the world I’ve seen such a wide selection of different houses and the way they’re arranged always stuck with me.

    I feel like being without a home and seeing how others keep theirs has made me realise just how important certain things are, like light, space and a good bed!
