What is CoolSculpting?
CoolScupting is a non-surgical procedure that uses a device to kill fat cells in targeted parts of the body so that they can be eliminated. It isn’t meant as a solution for obesity, but it’s perfect for men and women who need a little extra help getting rid of noticeable bulges in problem areas that are notoriously resistant to trimming. The CoolSculpting systems are safe, they won’t damage your skin and patients can go about their usual business as soon as they leave their surgeons office.
The science behind CoolSculpting is called Cryolipolysis®, and it was developed by Harvard scientists Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson, MD. A gel pad and applicator fit comfortably around the area to be treated, then the temperature is gradually lowered until it freezes the fat cells below the skin’s surface. Once these cells reach a certain temperature, they die and are expelled naturally during the body’s usual elimination process. The success rate is just above 95%, and the results are long-term; ones the fat cells die, they’re gone for good.
Benefits and Drawbacks
The advantages of coolsculpting far outweigh any drawbacks, which are few. There is some minor discomfort at first, and you might experience a mild pinching or pulling sensation as the fat deposits are manipulated. Other side effects include temporary swelling, mild bruising or redness, numbness and tingling in the treated areas; these symptoms usually disappear within hours after treatment.
Now on to the benefits. Coolsculpting in completely non-invasive. There’s no anesthesia involved, no cutting and no needles. Patients with relatively minor fat deposits will notice a difference after their first treatment; problem areas may take a few more visits to resolve. There’s no recovery time needed after a sculpting session, and each session lasts about one hour; many patients receive multiple treatments during the same visit. Since the results are permanent, there’s no diet or lifestyle change necessary, but it’s a good idea to step-up your fitness game if you don’t want to address the problem again.
The treatment is FDA-approved for use on the following areas:
– inner and outer thighs
– under the chin
– abdomen
– buttocks
– sides, where the muffin-tops grow
