having a greenhouseWhether you are a gardener, a farmer, or just a hobbyist, you can probably use a greenhouse, i.e. if you don’t have one already for some reason. While there are a number of actual advantages to having the structure in your backyard in terms of gardening and farming, we don’t usually associate it with our own health. However, as it turns out, a greenhouse can indeed contribute towards your health both directly and indirectly. Read on to find out how we came to this conclusion.

Eating Green During the Winters

We all know how important it is to eat vegetables and fruits on a daily basis and that’s exactly where the greenhouse comes in. Even when it’s freezing cold outside and all your outdoor plants are done for the season, the ones in your climate-controlled greenhouse will continue to provide you with a regular supply of fresh vegetables and fruits; things which would otherwise be impossible to grow in the harsh, cold climate outside. In fact, this little advantage stretches beyond just the perilous seasons of autumn and winter. If you live in a part of the world where growing certain types of vegetables isn’t even an option, the greenhouse may allow you to grow them and stay healthy in the process.

Gardening is Good Exercise in the Winter

Gardening is good exercise and if you love it, it’s even better because you will be doing it more often. However, the problem is that during the winter season, outdoor gardening is not an option in most states. Having a properly built, climate controlled greenhouse allows you to tend to your gardening duties even when it’s raining or snowing outside. In addition to the advantages of healthy eating as mentioned above, this also makes sure that you are getting some much-needed exercise year-round. Admittedly, it cannot really compare to the toil of outdoor farming or gardening, but that could also be a good thing if you consider the few months of winter to be a nice and well-deserved break from the heavy stuff.

It’s Simply Healthy to be Around Plants

It isn’t really a secret that being around greenery is good for health and in this day and age of fast disappearing forests and trees in general, a garden is pretty much your own little piece of green that brings to you all the benefits of being around plants. The greenhouse, on the other hand, is an extension of that green patch which creates the opportunity for us to be around our favorite plants throughout the year. If you are wondering what exactly are the benefits of working with plants, read the following points to understand them better.

  • All plant species, in varying degrees, act as natural air filters
  • The natural green color of plants psychologically calms us down

A Feeling of Accomplishment

A properly constructed greenhouse can be used to grow exotic flowers and fruits that would not survive outside without their respective native climates. Being able to grow plants successfully gives us a feeling of accomplishment and happiness and may act as a driving factor for a lot of people. It has been found that the act of gardening itself can help people fight off depression and anxiety, but adding a greenhouse to the mix can take the whole thing up by a few notches. Besides, there’s no offseason in a weather-controlled greenhouse, so you pretty much have some gardening to always keep you busy, happy, and relaxed.

There is a point to be noted though; in spite of all the good, some people who work in large greenhouses do become sick at times. However, the sickness actually originates from the excessive use of chemicals and pesticides rather than the plants themselves. You should wear a mask or an air-filter while working in a greenhouse if have asthma or allergies, which can indeed be aggravated by pollens from certain species of plants.

As you can see, there is a very clear connection between healthy lifestyle, gardening, and greenhouses, but in order to take advantage of them, you will need to build a greenhouse first that can withstand the extreme effects of weather and can provide protection to your plants (and you) throughout the year. This is why it is recommended that you choose only high-quality greenhouse equipment to build yours because this is an important investment.

Even if it costs you more upfront, you will be thankful for your wise decision down the line, and so will your health.
