fitness classesDo you love the idea of dance fitness so much that you could envision teaching your own class, creating your choreographies, and helping students discover the joy that is dance fitness? Take this dream into your own hands by getting certified.

Not sure where to start? Check out our steps below:

Getting Certified: 4 Easy Steps

Many programs are popping up offering a step-by-step process to certification. For example, Bollywood-infused Bombay Jam offers dance fitness certifications in four steps similar to below.

  1. Start by registering for the event. Find out when certification events are set to happen. By knowing in advance, it’ll be easy for you to fix your schedule to work around those dates.
  1. Study the review materials, chapter and verse. When you receive your review materials, read over every section. Don’t skip anything. Go over the material from start to finish. This will help you prepare for your certification. Also, know how much time you have to review everything. When you do know, fix your schedule accordingly. Also, try to keep yourself from procrastinating. Slay the dragon of delay by reminding yourself of what you want to accomplish with your certification, what it would mean if you passed and why you don’t want to fail. Set your mind to succeed. A positive attitude always wins.
  1. Attend the event. When the examination date is finally here, make sure you’ve had plenty of rest the night before. Don’t exhaust yourself preparing for the certification. Just relax. A relaxed mind is more alert, fresh, and has a higher chance of passing the certification with flying colors.
  1. Get the results. Try to get your mind off the results while you wait. It won’t do you any good to get anxious over the results. Instead, use the time to improve and be even better at what you want to do. Consult other sources on dance fitness such as Youtube, and learn how you could learn new choreography to improve upon the moves you already know.

When you finally get the result and it’s not the one you wanted, don’t worry. Keep at it and you’ll surely improve. Then go for another round. Look at it this way: you didn’t fail. You just got a second chance to perfect things.

Teaching Tips for Beginners

If you do get your dance fitness certification, then congratulations! As an instructor, what’s the first thing you’ll do? How do you start teaching your fitness classes? It might be a good idea to kick off your class by talking about some of the best benefits they can look forward to from dance exercise.

  1. Dancing the stress away. Stress is one of the most prevalent causes of health problems in our society. One effective way to treat stress, though, isn’t through medication. Instead of relying on drugs, dance workouts offer a healthier and safer alternative. Your dance fitness class can easily distract your students from their problems. The less stressed and worried they are, the healthier and happier they’ll be.
  2. Building positive connections with people through dance. Unlike traditional gym workouts where you have to slave like a dog or be goaded by a trainer making snide remarks about your weight or performance, dance fitness couldn’t be more different. Instead of using the negative or brash to push you to your limits, your classes will be fun, positive, and contagiously upbeat. The logic is simple: if the class is fun enough, students will find a way to do it again and again. And they were right. Given how massively popular Zumba has grown as a dance workout routine, it’s amazing what people can accomplish when a lot of fun is involved. You can follow the same idea for your Bombay Jam or comparable fitness class. The more fun you cater the experience to your students, the more they’ll look forward to showing up each week.
  1. A great alternative to sports and exercise. Always interested in becoming healthy and fit but never had any interest in sports? If sports activities seem a little too regimented for your taste, then 90 minutes of dancing should be perfect. If your students feel the same way, then they’ll take to your dance exercise class like a duck to water, or at least better than they would with sports exercises that might come across as too intense. According to WebMD, dance exercises make use of a lot of your muscles, which is why it’s such a great alternative to sports. From lunges and jumps to non-stop hip movements, dance fitness allows your students to get the workout their bodies need without requiring them to spend countless hours inside a regimented, drab gym.

So if you’re at a loss as to how you’ll get your classes started, then focus on the positives. Outlining the benefits of a dance fitness class, and then catering the little details around the student experience will ensure a positive expectation and environment for all involved.
