winery-bike-williamsburg-virginia-healthy-voyagerStaying healthy and keeping fit are goals that everyone should strive for. We all want to be in the best shape possible at all times. That means sticking to your fitness routine even during the holidays and vacations.

If you’re the type of person that likes going to the gym, you can always check beforehand whether the hotel you’re staying at provides one. However, if it doesn’t, do not worry as there are many other activities you can do during your trip which you will enjoy!

One might have the misconception that a vacation is a time for you to relax and not commit to any exercise. However, many fun activities can get your body to stay active while still enjoying your time off work. In this article, we have listed several outdoor activities you can explore to maximize your time.

Water Rafting

Water rafting is fun but a rough sport that can be dangerous to some, especially those inexperienced. Hence, if this is your first time trying out this activity, do your research beforehand. You can start by finding a reliable rafting provider and a tour agency with an experienced skipper and proper equipment. Trust us; you do not want to risk your safety.

Depending on the river, there are different levels of difficulty when it comes to water rafting. Thus, don’t go overboard by skipping straight to the most difficult one if you’re starting. Keep in mind that the difficulty level also changes according to the time of the year as the water level changes.

To go on water rafting, you’ll need proper clothing, shoes and bathing costumes. During the colder weather, you’ll need a neoprene suit, socks, boots, gloves and a waterproof jacket. Additionally, don’t forget to prepare a dry outfit for you to wear at the end of the adventure. If you like outdoor activities filled with high levels of adrenaline rush, then this sport is the one for you!

Kayaking

If you like water-based activities, but water rafting seems too scary or adventurous, you can always consider kayaking as the second option. Don’t be discouraged if you never tried out kayaking before, as you will be provided with everything. From instructions to complete equipment, the instructor will be there to guide you all the way through.

You also have the choice of kayaking on the river or at sea. While kayaking, you can take your time to enjoy the scenery of crystal-clear water. Additionally, it will allow you to explore hidden coves and untouched natural gems along the way. Just imagine getting to a beach and having it on your own. Doesn’t that sound like a dream come true?

Kayaking is all about paddling. Due to this, you get to work out your whole upper body while still having the time of your life. It might be tiring if you’re not used to working out, but it’s worth a try. Side note, remember to protect yourself during hot seasons by bringing a hat, water and some snacks. Also, don’t forget to apply your sunblock to protect your skin from the sun’s harsh radiation.

Cycling

Cycling is the more enjoyable option compared to walking. Even if you don’t have a bicycle, don’t use it as an excuse not to go cycling. This is because we’re pretty sure that most tourist destinations would have a bike rental available. Often, the rentals are affordable, and you can utilize bicycles to explore the city and see as much as possible.

If you’re an experienced cyclist or prefer something more adventurous, consider getting a mountain bike. Then, you can check out the nearest nature and bike trails. This information is usually available online or at the local tourist board offices. On top of that, you can also ask for suggestions from the locals for some hidden gems trails.

Other than being active, cycling is a great activity to explore and witness astonishing landscapes and discover hidden gems. However, before you go on the chosen route, remember not to underestimate the trail. Always be prepared with the necessary equipment. Wear proper clothing, bring water and light snacks, and you’ll be good to go!

Trekking or Mountaineering

Often people get confused between the terms trekking and hiking, as it is sometimes used interchangeably. However, this is not true as these two sports are very different. Trekking means taking a long journey on foot, while hiking is the activity of going for long walks in the nature for pleasure. Hiking can be considered simpler compared to trekking as trekking requires more organization.

If you have experience in mountain climbing, you can always consider trekking or mountaineering. The required skills are that you must be good at reading maps and love nature since this activity is truly a hardcore sport. Before checking any mountains or hills to climb, ensure that you have the proper clothing, shoes and a backpack. Additionally, always check your fitness level and never overestimate yourself before going on this adventure.

A few hours surrounded by nature or even a day (think camping!) will do you good. Moreover, trekking is an excellent method to stay active as it helps pump your leg muscles. On top of that, being surrounded by fresh air is also good for your lungs. Lastly, don’t forget to take your vitamin to give yourself the extra energy boost.

Running

If everything else sounds too complicated and time/budget-consuming, the easiest thing you can do is run. All you need is a shirt, shorts and a good pair of shoes. But, of course, if you’re feeling a little bit overwhelmed about where to run, you can always ask your hotel’s receptionist, a local or download your preferable route on your mobile phone. However, if you’re confident you’ll be safe and won’t get lost, put on your running shoes and hit the road!

We suggest you replace concrete trails with parks where you can surround yourself with nature. This will allow you to explore the current place you’re travelling to. If you plan to go for a longer run, ensure that you are equipped with the necessary stuff. Bring a camel bag and a water bottle sto keep you hydrated.

There are a lot of benefits to running, some include boosting your mood and energy levels and improving your cardiovascular health. Unfortunately, many individuals tend to hurt themselves while they go running. To prevent this, you first need to have a warm-up session beforehand. This will allow your body to stretch and avoid any complications happening while you’re running. Lastly, do not forget to use a smartwatch to keep track of your running progress and motivate you.

There are a lot of activities that you can do during your holidays to keep yourself active. But, just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you have to be in a slump. Participate in some of our sports suggestions to keep your fitness on track!
