How To Improve Your Well Being Mentally and Physically

There comes a point in your life when you realize all the things you were able to do when you were younger now suddenly have a worse effect on you. Staying up late now leaves you miserable and exhausted the next day. Excessive drinking makes you feel horrible when you wake up in the morning.

As we grow older, our bodies don’t respond in the same way they once did. The abuse we thought was fine has now begun to catch up to us. And it’s leaving us worse for the wear.

Though there are options out there such as life insurance for alcoholics, it is important to treat your mind and body better as you age to avoid having to look into these kinds of options.

So where can you start? How can you begin taking better care of your well being and start feeling better all around? Here are some improvements you can make for a healthier lifestyle.

Pay Attention to What You Eat

The foods you eat have such an impact on your mental and physical wellness. It’s no secret eating things like fast food every day will have a horrible impact on your body, but even if you avoid these foods, you still may not be giving yourself all of what you need.

Cooking at home does not always equal eating healthy. You may still be eating foods that are overly processed, high in bad fat, sugar, or sodium.

When you eat clean, healthy foods, many amazing things will happen to your body and mind such as:

  • Improved mood
  • Increased energy levels
  • Decreased inflammation throughout the body
  • Boosted metabolism
  • Lower cholesterol levels

The truth is, a better you starts with what you choose to put into your body. Even if you exercise daily, the food you eat will always catch up with you.

Not all eating plans are effective for everyone, and it’s important to listen to your mind and body to see how you are feeling. Trying different foods and paying attention to their effects on you will allow you to find clean, healthy options that work for you.

Get Moving

This one seems blatantly obvious when you think of ways to improve yourself. Exercise has so many health benefits, both physical and mental.

Some of the best benefits of exercise are:

  • Lowered blood sugar levels
  • Reduced risk of depression
  • Lowered risk of heart disease
  • Weight control
  • Stronger bones and muscles
  • Lower stress levels

It doesn’t have to be intimidating, either. There are many ways to get started and committed to exercising. Something as simple as walking a little each day is a great way to move your body and get your heart pumping.

The most important thing is to find a form of exercise that works for you. Finding a way to get moving that you enjoy can increase your motivation and encourage you to stick with it rather than give up.

Reduce Your Alcohol Intake

Sure, eating healthier and exercising are great ways to improve your overall well being. But did you know if you drink alcohol in excess, those things won’t matter as much as they should?

Aside from the well-known hangover, alcohol can cause real damage to your body if you drink too much too frequently. Long-lasting effects such as liver disease, pancreatitis, diabetes, and even frontal lobe damage can all occur from excessive alcohol consumption.

Learning to limit alcohol intake can greatly improve your health. Finding a good balance that works for your life will allow you to feel better, both mentally and physically.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water has incredible benefits for both your mind and body. It is vital to your health to drink water every day. You should try and aim for 6-8 glasses of water per day.

Some of the health benefits of drinking the recommended daily dose of water are:

  • Improved mood
  • Improved memory
  • Better kidney health
  • Increased energy levels
  • Better gut health

Drinking water every day is a great way to keep yourself hydrated and healthy.

Try to Meditate

Coming from someone who is almost never relaxed, finding a way to do so is extremely important if you want to feel your best. Stress and anxiety can take a toll on your mental and physical health.

Finding an outlet such as meditation can be a great way to manage some of your stress and find an inner peace you perhaps didn’t know existed.

Meditation can help you reduce negative emotions, calm your heart rate, and overall feel more at peace. This in turn can help your physical and mental well being increase.

If you are like me and struggle to find the inner peace to meditate, start small. Only a few minutes a day and slowly increase your time. You may find you truly begin to look forward to these moments of peace.

And if you feel as though you need assistance with your meditation, there are always apps and videos available to help you get started on your journey.

Get Plenty of Sleep

We live in a busy world. It can be extremely difficult to get the amount of sleep you truly need. However, the impact of sleep on your mental and physical well being is large.

Sleep plays an important part in our motivation, meaning when you are sleep deprived you will most likely not want to get out and exercise or take the time to cook yourself healthy meals.

That’s not all. Good sleep is also linked to reduced inflammation in the body, higher metabolic rates, reduced risk of stroke, reduced risk of heart disease, stronger productivity, and stronger concentration.

Making the time to get the proper amount of sleep is vital to keeping up with your mental and physical wellness.

Take Care of Yourself

Choosing to take better care of yourself may come with some sacrifices. You may see friends less frequently due to different lifestyle choices. You may feel you are missing out on certain things to get the sleep you need or exercise.

However, taking care of your physical and mental well being will give you incredible short term and long term benefits — such as being able to easily pass your life insurance exam — that make it worth the sacrifices.

Your body and your brain will only continue to improve and you, in turn, will feel better.
