Home Workouts: What to Do When Stuck at Home

best home exercisesIf you find yourself stuck inside your house due to the coronavirus, you may quickly find your normal routine starting to slip. It can be very easy to spend your days in your pajamas in front of your television, while responding to the occasional work email.

After a few days of this, however, you might start feeling a tad bit unhealthy. Whether it is fatigue from keeping odd hours or feeling bloated from eating too many carbs, your health can quickly decline if you start slacking on your personal health.

One aspect of your normal routine you’re going to want to keep is working out several times a week. Not only does working out help keep you physically fit, but it also provides you with a much-needed break from staring at a screen.

It isn’t all that hard to develop an at-home workout routine. No matter what your level of physical fitness is, there are activities you can do comfortably in your home or around your yard. So, stop lounging around your house and get moving several times a week!

Always warm-up

Even when doing simple exercises at home, always make sure to warm up! Warming up gives your body a chance to prepare for exercises and lowers the possibility of injury. Stretching your muscles helps to gradually start to increase your heart rate. It circulates blood flow. And, it also helps your joints loosen. It only takes a few minutes to warm up. Start by doing stretches such as lunges or arm circles. You should gradually increase the intensity of your warm-up.

What to do without equipment

If you’ve found yourself suddenly stuck at home and you’re used to going to the gym, you may find yourself without exercise equipment. The good news is, there are many different exercises you can do at home without any equipment!

Yoga is a favorite of many; while having a yoga mat is nice, it isn’t a requirement. Calisthenics are another good way to exercise; a routine of crunches and pull-ups can help keep you in shape until the gym reopens.

Stream videos to learn

If you’re not sure how to develop an exercise routine, consider utilizing online videos. There are many videos on Youtube that go over entire exercise routines. Following an online video is a good way to introduce yourself to new exercises that you’re not familiar with.

Not to mention, online videos can help prevent injuries. Most online routines gradually increase in intensity and are followed by a cool-down period. They also show you the right way to do exercises you’re not familiar with.

More intense workouts

If you’re used to more intense workouts at the gym, you may need to order some simple equipment to keep at home. Consider purchasing some hand weights or some dip bars for home use. If you’re planning to return to the gym after a few weeks, there is no reason to spend too much money on home equipment. However, if you discover you prefer working out at home instead of at the gym, consider purchasing larger exercise equipment to intensify your workout.

Staying hydrated

Even if you’re exercising at home, you need to stay hydrated! Dehydration is never fun and can lead to confusion, irritability, and fatigue. This can increase your chances of getting injured while working out.

Most people need to drink about eight cups of water a day, though this may change slightly based on your weight and overall health. Drink water before, during, and after your workout. If you don’t like drinking water, certain types of food, such as watermelon, can also help.

Going for walks

Finally, as long as you’re not in a shelter-in-place order, there is no reason you can’t go out for a walk around your neighborhood! While you’ll want to maintain proper social distancing until the likelihood of contracting COVID-19 decreases, you can still go out and get some fresh air. Find a nice route near your house to walk along. Even walking for a few minutes each day is better than sitting around all day. And if you want a workout, go for a run instead of a walk!

Final thoughts

If you’re currently stuck at home and are trying to maintain some degree of normalcy in your life, you’re going to want to develop a workout routine. Use online videos if you need inspiration. Try to exercise every other day, whether it is in your house or going for a walk around your neighborhood.
