Family Fitness: 5 Ways You Can Motivate Your Family to Go Exercising Together

skiing with kidsStaying fit as a mom can be tough. After all, modern moms already have a lot on their plates without adding an exercise routine, as most work full time, take care of the kids, keep up with housework, and already struggle to make time for themselves. This article will introduce five ideas that can help get the whole family motivated to exercise together.

Learn from Other Moms

The best way for new mothers to find out what kind of exercise schedule will work for them and their families is to learn from other women who have been in similar positions. Moms of all ages and in all states of physical health can learn about Moms Into Fitness for an introduction to one group that provides fitness classes, healthy recipes, and innovative ideas to get the whole family up and moving.

Schedule Family Walks

The length of family walks will depend on how old the kids are, what kind of shape everyone is in, and how much time moms can devote to daily physical activities. Some families plan walks for before or after dinner, while others prefer to take them in the morning before everyone starts his or her separate day. Either way, choosing a set time when everyone can go for a walk together is the best way to turn the experience into an enjoyable part of the family’s routine.

Enlist Help with Yard Work and Chores

Parents and kids alike can benefit from spending time outdoors engaging in yard work, which is often an exercise routine in its own rite. Households that have wood-burning stoves can take turns chopping wood, although this kind of work is best left to parents and older kids. Those with yards that need to be raked can turn it into a game and allow kids to jump in the leaf piles after they’ve completed their sections.

Facilitate an Active Lifestyle

Moms with kids can fit short bursts of exercise into even busy schedules. Try biking to the store with the kids instead of taking the car, or if the store is too far, at least park at the opposite end of the parking lot to get in the extra walk. Choose physical activities like bowling, laser tag, or mini-golf for family outings instead of planning movie nights or playing board games, as these outings will give kids and parents alike more incentive to get up and move around more.

Get a Dog

There’s no creature on Earth that’s better at getting kids and parents alike up and moving than a family dog. Families can plan walks or hikes with their pups and, if the dogs are small or especially well-behaved, the parents can get the kids in on the action by letting them take charge. Plus, puppies require a lot of play, which means kids tend to get a lot of exercises, too.

The Bottom Line

Modern families don’t spend as much time together as they used to, and modern moms rarely have the time to devote to personal daily exercise routines. Getting kids and spouses on-board with some physically active family fun is the best way to both facilitate family bonding and make sure everyone is getting the exercise he or she needs. Just keep activities with kids safe and age-appropriate to make sure the activities are fun for everyone.
