4 Superfoods You Should Include in Your Diet

superfoodsSince time immemorial, humans have been chasing after the ultimate food, which contained all the essential vitamins and minerals that the body needs. There was a time when people went crazy about all-natural, organic food; after that, everybody was hysterical about gluten in their edibles. There was also the hype on coco water, avocado, and kale. Many of these health-food hypes are now considered superfoods.

In reality, superfoods don’t exist. There’s no such thing as one food that has everything nutrition-wise. Superfoods were labeled as such by marketers to generate hype and increase sales. Although superfoods may not have it all, it’s true that many of them are rich in vitamins and nutrients that are good for the body. These superfoods, in particular, can have a lot of benefits to your health if you include them in your diet.

Leafy Greens

Green has always had a good rep. It’s a very relaxing and soothing color. And when it comes to edibles, green food has so much to offer, especially leafy green vegetables. Kale, Swiss chard, spinach, collard greens, and turnip greens are some of the most nutrition-rich vegetables.

Leafy greens are full of carotenoids, which are organic pigments that give plants their color. Carotenoids are anti-inflammatory compounds and can fortify the body against certain types of cancer. Consuming green leafy vegetables help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and cognitive decline.

The hyped kale packs so many vitamins K, A, and C, as well as antioxidants, such as lutein and beta-carotene. Kale is best eaten raw to get all its nutrients. For those who have problems managing their sugar levels, Swiss chard contains flavonoid syringic acid, which helps reduce blood sugar levels.

Berries

Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are not only delicious, but they also provide plenty of nutrients. Berries are high in fiber and contain high levels of vitamin C, especially strawberries. They also provide manganese, vitamin K1, copper, and folate.

In many studies, black raspberries and strawberries were shown to help reduce bad cholesterol in patients with metabolic syndrome or people who are obese.

Berries also have anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants, which may help people with diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. The antioxidants in berries, like anthocyanins, can also protect the cell from damage caused by free radicals. Not only that, berries can be eaten in many ways. You can make them into smoothies, use them in desserts, or eat for breakfast or as a snack.

Nuts

Almonds, cashews, macadamia, peanuts, pistachios, and walnuts are delicious snacks, but they can also be used to add flavor and texture to recipes. Nuts pack a lot of fiber, vegetable protein, unsaturated fats, and Omega-3 fatty acids. They also contain anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants, like carotenoids and phenolic acids,  which help combat cell and tissue damage caused by oxidative stress.

The fiber in nuts helps reduce cholesterol and assists in preventing type 2 diabetes. Eating fiber-rich food also makes one feel fuller while eating less, which means they’re good for people who are controlling their weight. Nuts also provide lots of vitamin E and L-arginine, which help lessen plaque in the arteries, promote the health of artery walls, and lessen the risk of heart diseases.

Green Tea

Dubbed as the healthiest drink on the planet, green tea is rich in antioxidants and nutrients and have numerous health benefits. Matcha, made from finely ground green tea leaves, is a type of high-grade green tea that has been growing more popular in recent years due to its delicious taste and powerful benefits to the mind and body.

Unlike teas contained in a bag, matcha takes several steps to prepare. In Japan, they have a whole tea ceremony to prepare a cup of matcha tea. The delicate and almost ritualistic preparation process is part of the reason why matcha helps calm the mind and body.

Drinking matcha green tea is said to improve the metabolism and burn calories. It also helps detoxify the body and lower blood sugar and cholesterol. Matcha also provides certain vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, selenium, chromium, magnesium, and zinc. A taste of matcha can also boosts the mood and helps with your concentration.

Final Thoughts

There’s no ambrosia on earth that can help you stay young and healthy forever and give everything your body needs. Superfoods are the closest you can get to something as beneficial. But remember that the human body works in complex ways.

Although superfoods provide tons of nutrients and compounds that the body needs, it’s necessary to consume them in moderation. Too little of the good things can be detrimental, but too much can also be harmful. Balance is the key to eating a healthy diet and helping maintain your overall health.
