3 Ways Your Office Job Is Bad For Your Health

deskWe all have things that we don’t like about our jobs. Whether it’s the frustration of endless email chains or annoying colleagues, there’s always something that makes you want to roll over and go back to sleep instead of getting up and going into the office. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that their job could actually be dangerous to their health. Some jobs have obvious dangers that come with the territory but even office jobs could be slowly killing you. Next time you’re looking for a reason to switch jobs, remember these work related issues that are damaging your health.

Stress

It’s no surprise that stress is top of this list. Working hours are on the rise and because of the advent of email, people are never away from the office. Even when we get home, we’re still working and never really switching off. People are also taking less time off than they used to so we’re not giving ourselves a chance to recharge our batteries. That’s bad news because it increases stress levels no end and that can eventually lead to all sorts of mental health issues. If you’re feeling too stressed at work, you should make sure that you’re taking all of the time off you’re entitled to and switch off your emails when you leave the office so you don’t take your work home with you. You can also use functional stress relief products like massagers to help you unwind and relax at the end of a hard day. If things are particularly bad, it’s worth speaking to your boss and telling them that your workload is too high. They might be able to find other employees that can take some of the weight off your shoulders.

Back Problems

Recent studies show that sitting down is really bad for you. Which isn’t great considering most of us are sitting down all day long at work. So, just stand up more and you’ll be fine, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, standing up for too long is bad for your health as well. Your body doesn’t respond well to being in the same position for long periods, regardless of whether you’re standing or sitting, and you’ll end up with back problems. If you’re sitting at a desk all day, you need to ask your boss to provide a proper chair that offers good support. If you’re standing all day, you should make sure to take regular breaks and sit down every now and again to relieve some of that pressure.

Boredom

The phrase ‘dying of boredom’ actually has some truth to it. If you’re constantly bored at work, you’re far more likely to use unhealthy things to perk you up. People that are always bored are more likely to eat snacks, drink coffee and maybe even smoke to relieve some of that boredom. If you can’t keep your eyes open, you need to start varying your work day so you don’t get bored as quickly. You’ll work more efficiently and you won’t be as likely to resort to unhealthy habits.

Your job could be doing some serious damage to your health so make sure that you do something about it before it’s too late.

You made a good point about stress. Nowadays, many people work from home and they have found that it became even more difficult for them to switch off because the boundaries of work and life are blurred. That’s why I really recommend to get out of the house from time to time, at least twice a week to change the scenery and fully concentrate on tasks. You can choose a coworking space for this or a local cafeteria. But keep in mind that the cafeteria is more suitable for those people who need a little ambient noise during work.
