Just a stone’s through from Naples and a short boat ride from Sorrento, you’ll find the beautiful Italian island of Capri. For decades it’s been known for it’s beautiful scenery, fine dining and luxury, perfect for starlets to spend a weekend. But you don’t have to be a starlet to enjoy this gorgeous Mediterranean isle!
Hop on a ferry from the mainland Sorrento and in a short while you dock on the picturesque port side of Capri. Lined with shops and restaurants, it’s tough to choose where you may want to check out first! And then you can make your way up the funicular to the next tier of the island, also lined with shops and eateries. But then, you can take an open air cab to the very top where you can take a lovely walk around the island, soaking in the views or even a fun chair lift that takes you to the island peaks.
For those who want to see the island from all sides, taking a boat ride around the island is lots of fun, especially those that take you to the Blue Grotto. Stunning!
But wait, you want to hear about food, right? Ok!
First off, a stay at the Caesar Augustus is a must. Located at the top of the island, it offers breathtaking views, luxury accommodations and yes, vegan food! On the cliffside of Mount Solaro, the part of the island called Anacapri, the hotel is paradise just minutes from downtown Capri and a short walk to the center of Anacapri.
The views from the restaurant showcase the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and the Sorrentine Peninsula while serving up incredible, fresh Mediterranean cuisine. The food is made to order from regional produce, mainly using typical local products and ingredients grown in the hotel’s kitchen garden, especially the signature Capri lemons! They have adopted “zero kilometer cuisine”: the philosophy of cooking using only the products of their land. And the vegan options are to die for! The pasta and bread is made fresh, anything with tomatoes and lemons will send you straight to heaven and of course, you must have limoncello!
Outside of the hotel, there is so much to see and do and I was stoked to stumble upon Farmacia Quisisana where I was able to stock up on some yummy vegan snacks and goodies! Perfect for sightseeing!
There are so many wonderful places to dine (Cafe Agosto right at the marina is a good spot) and it’s quite easy to find vegan fare. Pizza marinara is always your best bet as a vegan in Italy as it is cheese free. Many gelaterias offer a non-dairy gelato option and the abundance of delicious local produce and handmade pastas will keep you full and happy for days!
Stay tuned as there is more southern Italian eats coming your way!
