6 Home Renovations That Can Help Protect Your Health

It goes without saying that your health should always be a priority. Did you know that something as simple as home renovations can help protect your health? We know it might sound strange, but it’s true! As reported by Comfy Living, an astonishingly high proportion of houses in the United States require renovation and improvement due to their age as roughly 80% of them were built at least two decades ago. Upgrading your home can help you save energy, improve air circulation, and improve the overall health of your home. To start investing in your health and well-being, take a look at some of these home renovations that can help protect your health.

1. Refinishing Bathtubs and Countertops

If you’re considering upgrading your bathroom, refinishing existing bathtubs and countertops is the perfect way to do it. Refinishing them with a coating of epoxy resin can help to prevent the growth of mold, bacteria, and fungi. Plus, according to Home Guide, most companies provide warranties on bathtub refinishes that range from three to 10 years, so you can rest assured that you’ll have a durable and clean home.

2. Installing an Energy-Efficient Furnace/Boiler

Old furnaces and boilers can emit dangerous gasses like carbon monoxide that can build up in your home and cause health problems. But don’t worry; upgrading to a modern, energy-efficient furnace or boiler can help! The U.S. Department of Energy states that upgrading a furnace or boiler from 56% to 90% efficiency in an average household with a cold climate will reduce carbon dioxide output annually by one and a half tons when heated via natural gas or two and a half tons when heated with oil.

3. Replacing Carpets With Hardwood Floors

Are you a fan of carpets? Although carpets are great for insulation, they can be difficult to clean and aren’t great for people with allergies. Fortunately, there’s a solution! Replacing carpets with hardwood floors can help reduce allergic reactions by decreasing allergens and dust mites, making your home much healthier.

4. Installing Air Purifying Systems

The air inside your home can become saturated with pollutants like pollen, pet dander, smoke, and dust. Installing an air purifying system can reduce these pollutants and provide a healthier living environment. But choosing the right type of filter for your purifier is important. HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are ideal for removing airborne particles and allergens and can help improve indoor air quality over time. According to the EPA, HEPA air filters can effectively remove up to 99.97% of allergens and pollutants as small as 0.3 microns, which include pollen, dust, mold, and bacteria.

5. Upgrading Ventilation Systems

Upgrading ventilation systems can help improve air quality and reduce the growth of mold and mildew in your home. You can do this by replacing old ventilation systems with ones that are more efficient and powerful enough to move air more effectively throughout your home. Installing an air exchange unit is a great way to improve air circulation and maintain healthy air quality. Furthermore, make sure to install vents in bathrooms and kitchens to allow the heat and steam to escape and improve air circulation in your home.

6. Installing Humidity Control Systems

High moisture levels in the atmosphere can lead to the proliferation of mold and mildew, which may lead to health problems like allergies, asthma flare-ups, and even respiratory infections. In addition to upgrading your home’s ventilation system, installing a dehumidifier will also help reduce the moisture level in your home and keep the air healthy and clean.

From refinishing bathtubs and countertops to installing humidity control systems, home renovations can help you lead a healthier lifestyle. Not only will they help reduce allergens and pollutants in your home, but they’ll also make your home more energy-efficient, cost-effective, and comfortable. If you want to protect your health, remember to invest in some of these home renovations.
