5 Ways to Care for Your Dog Throughout the Year

Dog Breeds prone to illnessYour dog will provide your household with much joy and comfort each day, which is why they will have become a much-loved member of your family. It is, however, essential to take care of their various needs all year round, which will help them to remain fit, happy, and healthy.

To ensure they enjoy many wonderful years by your side, here are five important ways to care for your dog:

  • A Clean, Safe Environment

Every pet pooch should live in a clean, safe environment. It is essential to provide a shelter that will protect them from extreme weather conditions. For example, if your dog lives in a kennel during winter, it must be well-insulated, elevated, and not be exposed to any strong winds or water.

  • A Healthy Diet

Many people might be tempted to overfill their dog’s bowl or to provide them with many treats as they might worry about underfeeding them or want to express their love. Yet, it is vital for their health and wellbeing to stick to the nutritional guidelines for your dog, which will be determined by their:

  • Age
  • Breed
  • Size
  • Activity levels

If you do want to give your pet a treat as a reward, make sure you only give them nutritious dog treats and not table scraps or snacks you would eat yourself.

  • An Annual Exam

A veterinarian’s job is to keep your pet pooch as healthy as possible. To ensure they remain in good physical condition, you should schedule annual, comprehensive exams from a respected clinic. For example, easyvetclinic, a Midlothian vet, can provide affordable exams that could result in the early diagnosis of a medical issue.

Spotting the signs early could ensure your pet receives the appropriate treatment to make a full recovery. You must also make sure your canine has received their core vaccinations, and you must protect them from parasites, such as fleas and ticks.

  • Make Time to Exercise

Support your dog’s good health and wellbeing by making time for exercise. The average dog requires at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day, but different breeds could require much more. If you’re unsure how much physical activity your canine needs to remain in great shape, talk to your vet about your pet’s daily requirements.

It is, however, vital to consider the season when exercising with your dog, as they should avoid too much physical activity on hot, humid days. You must also ensure they have access to clean water.

  • Care for Their Oral Health

Many dog breeds are prone to developing gum disease, which could lead to a serious health issue, such as an infection, organ problems, or premature tooth loss.

Take good care of your dog’s oral health by:

  • Brushing their teeth daily
  • Providing dental chews
  • Following the correct diet
  • Buying dental dog toys
  • Visiting a vet regularly

Following these handy steps will ensure your loveable dog remains in tip-top health throughout the years.
