5 Dentist-Approved Tips for a Healthy Mouth

healthy teethA healthy mouth is vital for a healthy body. But staying on top of dental hygiene is easier said than done. Be sure to use these oral health tips.

Would you be surprised to learn that over 40% of Americans would like to visit their dentist more often?

According to a survey conducted by the American Dental Association, it’s true! Considering that some 85% of us believe that a healthy mouth is either “very” or “extremely” important, perhaps it’s not such a shock after all.

Whether you have been to the dentist recently, have an appointment scheduled, or have been putting off a checkup for far too long, there are five crucial things you should do if you want to maintain good oral hygiene. Read on to find out what they are!

1. Be Sure You’re Brushing Properly

You already know that you should brush at least twice each day, and preferably after every meal, as well. But are you brushing correctly?

When you brush, position the bristles at a bit of an angle, so that they point at your gum line. Brush in small circles, moving across the surface of the teeth. Don’t forget about the back of your teeth, as well.

Most people think that scrubbing away at their teeth will be more effective, but experts say that’s actually not the case. Plaque is more easily removed from teeth than you might imagine. Just take your time — aim for two minutes per brushing session.

2. Get Fanatical About Flossing

What is stopping you from flossing your teeth regularly? Whatever the obstacle, there’s a way to overcome it.

If you don’t like the feeling of floss on your fingers or between your teeth, there are many alternatives. Disposable and reusable floss picks, brush picks or interdental brushes, and water flossers are the most common kind. Experiment to see which method you prefer.

Flossing is important, even vital, to a healthy mouth. In fact, it does most of the heavy lifting. Simply brushing the front and back of teeth isn’t adequate to remove all the plaque that can lead to tooth decay.

3. Take Care of Your Tongue

You’ve brushed and flossed, but there is still one step left in your oral hygiene regimen: cleaning your tongue.

A lot of bacteria can build up on the tongue’s surface, dentists say. Getting rid of it will help prevent plaque buildup, bad breath, and other health issues. There are dedicated tongue scrapers that will take care of the matter in a snap.

Or use your brush. Whatever tool you choose, take time to clean your tongue each time you brush.

4. Make Mouthwash a Must

Mouthwash is another effective way to combat gingivitis, plaque, and bacteria. Choose one that is alcohol-free — mouthwash containing alcohol can be drying, and that’s not ideal for good oral health. Otherwise, picking a mouthwash is mostly a matter of personal taste.

Remember that mouthwash on its own won’t safeguard your mouth. Use it in combination with brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly. Your dentist can tell you how to reverse gum disease most effectively, based on the condition of your oral hygiene.

5. Watch What You Eat (and Drink)

Steer clear of sticky, chewy, and sugary foods and drinks to prevent plaque from building up. If you must eat these treats, brush your teeth shortly afterward.

In addition, some foods are actually good for your teeth — crunchy fruits and vegetables can act as natural toothbrushes, scrubbing away plaque. Cheese has also been shown to benefit oral health, too!

A Healthy Mouth Is Worth the Effort

A healthy mouth is good in and of itself, but did you know that the health of your mouth can correspond with your overall health? Make sure to brush, floss, and clean your tongue regularly, to visit your Dentist In New York twice a year, and to eat the right type of foods. Soon you’ll have a clean healthy mouth, and that’s something to smile about!

    Hello
A great article, I liked it, a beautiful smile is self-confidence and self-love, and it is also the work of a good emergency dentist. I was naturally unlucky with my teeth and it made me feel sad and insecure for a long time. But then I found a great dentist near me and the clinic is open 24/7 and I was always in touch with my dentist and it was great. Now a smile is my most beautiful part of the body))) lol
