Tips on How to Deal With a Crime Situation While Abroad

travel burnoutWhen traveling, it’s unfortunate, but accidents happen, or you might be unlucky to be a victim of robbery or crime. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t panic. There are ways to go about it to let the authorities know and take necessary actions on your behalf. Here are handy tips for reporting a crime when you’re traveling abroad on vacation in another country other than your own country.

Get Medical Help First

The first thing to do when you become a victim of a crime is to immediately get medical help. Your life is more important than everything else, even when you think the assailant might be caught if you when to the police instead of going to the hospital. Unless, of course, if you can do both at the same time. In most countries, you will have to check into a private hospital for such a treatment. Medical reports from a doctor will help in making your case when claiming compensation.

Collect Evidence If Any Is Available

Many criminals will leave evidence of their crime on the crime scene, which can help police to catch them. If you suspect that evidence left by a criminal might be tampered with or lost, you should collect it if you have the time. It might help during the investigation. It will also help the legal team such as Oikonomakislaw.com to do their job.

Report A Lost Or Stolen Passport

If your passport is lost or stolen, make sure you report it first before you process another one. Criminals can use stolen or lost passports for illegal activities and identity theft situations, and reporting is vital for your safety since it will immediately be canceled and renewed. Many companies have online pages where you can get phone numbers to revoke the passport and keep you safe.

Report Rape Or Sexual Assault

Victims of rape who wish to report it must do so before leaving the country. In most countries around the world, there is a task force dedicated to collecting information from rape victims and proceeding with an inquiry. If you know any NGOs, you can also work with them to get you to the proper place to report a sexual assault or rape issue, but going straight to the police is the best and easiest way. If you don’t report a rape case while still in the country you traveled to, it’s unlikely anyone will investigate it if you report it after you have left.

Contact The Embassy

Country embassies handle any issue of crime correctly, and they should perhaps be the first people to call. If your country has an embassy in the country you’re visiting, reporting the case directly to them is the best way, and it will surely make things easier for you. Many embassies have pages on their website where you can report the crime and get an immediate response. You may also call the embassy, send them an email, or contact them via social media. As travelers, you have your rights to safety, and if you suffer a violation of your rights, reporting it to the embassy is the way to go.
