Below are a few pointers to keep in mind as you shop.
Find a Vendor You Trust
There are plenty of websites advertising the sale of baby furniture; however, not all vendors are created equally. As you come across websites like The Baby Cubby, be sure to do a little research to ensure they’re a trusted vendor. Checking things like the Better Business Bureau along with reputable consumer review sites can give you a clear understanding of whether or not a particular vendor provides quality products and outstanding customer service.
Rugs
Be sure you find rugs or carpeting that is free of harmful chemicals as baby will be spending a lot of time on it as he or she grows!. Also, try to find the best walker for carpet so baby can glide and walk with ease.
Cribs
There are strict laws in place for crib safety. Since your child will likely sleep in the crib for their first few years of life, you want to choose a crib that is durable and safe. In 2011, the government mandated that cribs that drop down on the side are banned from being purchased or sold. The reason is because the side can easily detach leaving room for babies to get wedged in between the mattress and crib bars.
Mattresses
It is important to purchase an infant mattress that will allow your child to sleep safe and sound in the crib. Your baby is still growing and developing and needs a firm, durable mattress to provide extra support. Be sure to feel the mattress for firmness before placing your baby in the crib. Soft mattresses can actually cause the baby to suffocate.
Bedding
When purchasing bedding for your child’s nursery, there are some things you need to keep in mind. To minimize our newborn’s risk for SIDS, you’ll need to keep the bedding and crib décor to a minimum. Thick plushy blankets, stuffed animals, and bumpers, for instance, should be avoided. If you want to purchase it to make the nursery look cute, this is fine but be sure that you always remove these items before placing your baby in the bed.
Play Pens
If you’re thinking of getting a bassinet/play pen there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. Much like the crib, you need to invest in a safe bassinet to ensure your baby doesn’t suffocate or get hurt. Check the mattress for firmness so baby can sleep without an issue.
Changing Tables
You’re going to be changing a lot of diapers, so investing in a changing table for the nursery might be beneficial. It provides a safe durable surface for your baby to lay on as you change their diapers. There are certain safety features you want to be on the lookout for, including: a guardrail at least two inches high to keep baby from rolling off, safety straps to keep your baby stationary as you change them, and last but not least sturdy legs and structure so that it doesn’t fall apart on you.
Rocking Chair and Ottoman
Rocking chairs and ottomans are more for your convenience and comfort than for the baby. However, you should still take precaution as you shop. Some would recommend investing in a glider instead of a rocking chair because it’s a bit safer. The back and forth motion allows the rocker to stay on the floor at all times whereas a rocking chairs legs lift up off the ground. Once your baby becomes mobile they could easily harm their tiny fingers or toes.
It can be so easy to get caught up in the bells and whistles of designing a nursery that we overlook the importance of safety, comfort, and functionality. As you shop for each of the above mentioned pieces of furniture for your baby’s nursery, be sure to keep each of these tips in mind.

Hi, thanks for your advice, I think the most important thing is to find quality furniture, or better, a local manufacturer. Our last purchase was from Anne Quinn and this is the excellent quality we were looking for.
I am needing to purchase a crib for my first baby, but I want to make sure I pick a really good one. I agree that finding a vendor I can trust is important. I will try and check out the Better Business Bureau and see what I can find there. I also am taking extra precautions about the style of the crib. I don’t want her to get caught in the bars or hurt in any way, so we will be sure to take that into account. These tips were great, thanks for sharing!
